Hey guys,
I moved here during the season this year and am looking to start my search for a new lease for the next season.
I came from the panhandle and have 3 sections around Quail, Texas, but that is a bit farther than I would like to drive on weekend hunts. What would you say the best county for a family lease with a good amount of average deer, some dove, varmits, hogs, and turkeys would be? I would like to stay within 1.5 hours of Ft. Worth, and spend around 1600-2000 per gun.
Thanks for the info.

You can find something in that price range in Young, Throckmorton, Jack, and Montague counties. All of those are well within your distance requirements and all have the wildlife you are looking for along with a fair chance at an above average deer.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I hunted in Jack County this year off of 380 and was not too happy with the results. I think I was in a bad area as it was next to some sort of scrap yard or something. The actual land was great, but I think the game found a better route around the property.

I hunted young this year and was VERY dissapointed and was worned bout the nocturnal deer and thought surely it wasnt that bad and was i wrong, we got pics of some good deer at night and saw a lot of bucks from 1-4 points and few doe. I would consider going south to hamilton or mills i think they are bout 1.5 - 2 hour but the extra 30 min. would be worth it.

For sure! That was my problem. I had great activity on feeders for deer and hog. Everything was nocturnal. I refused to shoot the deer I did see. They were yearlings and 1st year buck/does at best.
I have always heard Jack was great. I started my feeders and fed at a constant time all season. There were alot of acorns on the ground, and the oat field was pretty dry. Guess I could not bring them in.
Anyways, if anyone knows of a good lease for an experienced hunter and son, let me know. I might even be interested in letting someone hunt my 3 sections in Collingsworth county if we could strike a mutually beneficial relationship. Lot's of quail and deer.

I hunted Jack this year and saw nothing but 2.5 year olds. All around us has turned into day lease city and they have ruined the quality. Shots constantly all during the season. The land owners are getting gready as well. We are looking for another place for next year also.

I also heard shooting at all hours of the day and NIGHT. I know that the landowners next to our place shot a little robo-dear and were kindly greeted with hefty poaching fine. All of my deer probably wound up in a freezer in a garage somewhere.

Yep I certainly have my share of vampire deer over in Young County too but a few 3.5 to even 6.5 or 7.5 year olds have shown during shooting hours. I'm lucky in that I have very little pressure around me except for that provided by Hwy 16 Didn't see a deer lost to the hwy this year but one has been killed the previous 2 years after leaving the lease property. 380 had its fair share of bumper kills this year. I did not see many shooters on the side of the road either. I guess it was not the scrap yard/loud (poaching) neighbors that killed my year after all.
I also hunt near perring in Jack co. I have seen a couple of decent deer there, and I know the hogs are coming in. That should keep me busy until I can figure out how to make those deer sleep at night. With any luck, we will get some good spring and late fall rains this year and my oats will be in full swing. They were dead this year.

We have 0 hunting pressure aroung us we didnt hear a gun shot all year except when we shot a hog or doe. I just dont get it the deer had a 40 acre wheat field and nothing and feeders that they just tore up and a few times with fresh 100 lbs of corn that they would clean in one night, however the place is a little more open then i like but i thought that would help with seeing deer in the distance but nothing until 10 minutes after shooting light.
