Thinking about stripping down my AR308 and painting the upper, lower, and handguard maybe in burnt bronze or coyote tan/brown, but I'm scared lol. I got mucho mullah in this rifle and don't want to screw it up. Do rattle can jobs hold up? Can you strip the paint off EASILY if you don't like it? For those of you that have done it, if you had to do it over would you?

Thanks

Do rattle can jobs hold up? Not really, but lots of folks like that worn in look.

Can you strip the paint easily? Yes from metal, most rattle cans will strip with acetone, and better two part epoxy enamels like dura coat will strip with stuff called Airplane Stripper commonly available in automotive stores.Plastics and polymers are different as the strippers will most likely discolor them or soften them.

Haha that's what I was thinking but I have this rifle plus my SBR and my 22 upper I'd want to do, that chit would add up quick.

I do use my rifles a lot so it would probably get marked up pretty good. I do like the worn out look, my SBR is getting that look already. I wouldn't be doing any plastics or poly only metal parts.

if you're gonna keep it, spray it.
if you're gonna sell it, have it done.
only the buyer will care, the animals
could care less if it costs $10.00 or $100.00

Painting my AR today. Personally I dig the beat up/rustic camp look. Gives it a little character!

It was done with Krylon and it was a sticker package I had to modify to get the pattern I was looking for. I think I still have a roll of it.

K, that's actually not a multicam pattern. Is kind of a forest camo with a lighter tan. Aint no damn way I would try and tackle multicam !! scared

Im thinking about dropping the dime on this multi can hydro dip on one of the ones Im working one now. flehan

Haha yea I knew that wasn't multicam, not sure id even tackle the one you did much less multicam. I've seen that before on rainier looks awesome, but damn $85 per component is a little steep.

A 4oz bottle of cerakote will do several guns and only cost $40. I use a $35 air brush kit off of amazon, it came with the small compressor. I use the 'c' high temp which is air cured

Welllllllll just went and bought some rustoleum camo colors and a pair of fish net stockings lol SBR is about to go under the knife if I don't like it, I'll give it a bath in acetone and remove it.

Only problem with the cerekote I don't have any way of bead blasting the parts.

I think you will enjoy the process, it is very fun.

Tips

1) Don't take any short cuts with prep work - clean well!
2) Practice spraying on some scrap before moving to the gun to get the spray distance and thickness correct. Plus it gets the nozzle cleaned out. Always turn the can upside down and spray afterwards to clean the nozzle.
3) Multiple light coats is better than one heavy coat. Heavy coats will run, take forever to dry( usually stay soft on rattle cans) and are not as durable. Take your time. If you find yourself thinking you need to do one more coat while its wet, STOP.

Do yourself a favor get Aervoe paint instead of Krylon. Many more color choices much better quality and lasts longer. Krylon is the DPMS of paints.
