I'm looking for some backyard firepit ideas. Something easy to build and fairly inexpensive.

Are you looking for prebuilt or something you can make? Check out Woodland Direct, they've got parts and complete fire pits.

Big rocks and mortar them together in a circle. My uncle made one and it looked real nice but I don't have any pics of it.

dig a 6"x6" trench, lay some rebar and fill with concrete and level the top. find some leftover stone from a construction site and get some high temp mortar. perfect easy and cheap!
