ok I want to buy a rifle/scope combo for under $300. What is my best option in either a .270, 30-06 or 7mm.
Is Savage Hunter good or Mossberg?

Welcome to the THF, hope you enjoy the site, lots of really good folks on here with lots of great information. Any of the three calibers you mentioned would be a good starting point, with the 270 or 30-06 being a better choice than the 7mm Mag, but it is not a bad choice.

Less recoil, muzzle blast, probably way more accurate, cheaper to shoot, especially if your in Texas. You don't need a 7 mag. The 7 mag is not gonna kill them any faster! Even if your hunting out of state. It is not gonna kill Whitetail, Mule deer, Black bear , Hogs, Black tail deer, Caribou, Reindeer, Aoudad, Rams, And with the right premium loads Moose and Elk any faster! If you think the 270 is minimal for elk and moose, so is the 7 mag. Good Moose and elk calibers start from the 30 calibers on up! so maybe the 270 and 30-06 are better choices!

You'll never even get close to anything new in that price range that will be worthwhile.

you caould probably find a *decent*, used rifle around $300
but you should go with the 30-06
it will kill anything in north america
You can kill a fly with a sledgehammer.
But do you really need to son?

You can get a new Mossberg ATR100 under $300 at Academy (no scope of course). They also have a Howa 1500 Rifle and Scope combo for $389. Then of course a scopeless Mossberg or Marlin 30-30 will set you back around $350 new. Those are about the best prices I know of for respectable guns NEW.
You might look for a good used gun. You may find a used one for $300 or there abouts especially with deer season coming to a close and the economy still being in the tank.

How about we all remember what the poster put in the OP: Quote:
ok I want to buy a rifle/scope combo for under $300. What is my best option in either a .270, 30-06 or 7mm.
The original poster will have to find out whether or not he/she can buy what they are wanting within the price range they are listing.
As for why I listed the 270/30-06 as better for a starter gun than the 7 Mag, is simply because the 7 Mag is going to probably be more gun than this person will want to start out with.
Also, the 270 and 30-06 are more readily available in a wider selection of bullet grain weights.
Both the 270 and 30-06 have killed everything there is ti kill on the North American continent, which the last map I looked at includes Texas.
If $300.00 is all this person can afford, then we need to recommend guns or places to find guns that will fit within their price range.
If guns can not be found in that price range, It Ain't Our Fault, but at least the [person will have some base information on what to look for/at if they decide to try and come up with more funding.

Or Academys will have the ATR combo. I have tons of guns and if I went bankrupt (its slowly Happening now) and lost them all. When I collected enough cans it would be my first choice to buy. My ATR 30-06 is topped off with a Weaver Classic K6 and will put holes inside each other if i do my job. Great rifle for the money! Period.
