I didn't really have my hopes up that they would still have them but I got lucky I guess.

I don't think it's a unit that's well known for bear, although they're there. People go there for elk and deer.

Have done that...bought a small deep freezer and had the processor do a rush job.

I have yet to see a bear up there, but I always see sign, and someone in the group spots one. The odds are good enough for me to shell out the money.

I'll be focused on elk. I'll shoot a bear if I see one. I'll hunt bears when my bull tag is used.

And everyone with bear tags, be sure to read up on the regs. You can't shoot just any bear. Sows with cubs, as well as cubs, are off limits, I believe. I need a refresher on the rules, myself. Bears also have to be checked in.

Cant kill a bear with one or more cubs, or a cub less than 1 year old. I was told by a GW that a lactating sow would get you in deep chit and would be proof enough it had cubs. Cant take one when it is in a den. So Sneaky, this means no bear mining for you bud.

You have 5 days to personally take your bear to a DOW office, or officer. ( I called the GW and he met me at the processor YMMV) If you don't get the inspection, they will seize the it. My GW was cool about attaching the tag since I wanted a rug, he attached it around the neck tightly. Looks like a big azz industrial zip tie about 30" long.

Bear has to be thawed for inspection.

They may take a tooth, mine they didn't.

They may want you to take them to the kill site, they will be looking to see if you took organs, or other items (bladder) for sale on the black market and they will have a questionnaire for same. I knew the GW for many years, he didn't want to go look, but I offered. If they ask, you have to go show them the G pile/kill site.

Big concern is stumbling in it and breaking something or needing to get out in a truck and pushing snow and breaking brake lines without realizing it.

I have a good pair that I have yet to use. I'll try to watch the weather right before we go and throw them in if it looks unusual, but I'm taking an insulated pair of Danners, and some old Montrail hikers.
