My wife wanted to go see her friend. I thought Ok..... I'll try Hog Hunting. I Got my Bait of raspberry, beer, and corn. Pick out a couple good rifles. .270 WSM and a 6.8 SPC. Might carry my .45 for the heck of it. .270 I'll use 130 grain, and 6.8 SPC I'll use 110 grain. Any Advice I can get I would appreciate it. I Leave Sat 01/03/09 for a week.
This is something I have always want to do. But, just never did. I am really looking forward to it. Any other advice I can get from you guys would be very much appreciated. I'll have web access most of the time. And will check back. Hopefully I'll have some great picks for you. Thanks for any help in advance you can lend a Yankee.

If I run into a decent Bore, I'll probably body shoot him. .270 wsm may decapitate him. Wouldn't mind to mount one of these ugly critters. I figured .300 was alittle big and .243 maybe to small. So I thought .277's would be a good choice. If close I'll use the .45. I figured the bow might be next time if I ever go again. Do meat markets process them in Texas? Or should I plan on field deboning the quarters?

I have read that there is a very hard cape just behind the should. Will a .270 wsm and a 6.8 penetrate that ok?

All those rounds you mentioned should work. Unless you plan to mount, I would go for neck / head shots. I'll pm you link to a picture.

I going to be in Corsicana. Wow, three times with a .45 long colt. Tough critter. Maybe I'll rethink that and take the neck head shots. lol lol

They are more than tough, they are like little tanks. On my big boar post I shot him with a HOT loaded 180 grain 30-06 quartering to me at 50yds right behind the ear and exiting about at the front shoulder. He didn't go no where but he didn't give up for 5 minutes or so. I've seen them walk off a .243 to the vitals and had several -06's go a good ways with vitals shots. Anymore I'll go for the head/neck shot, spine in front of shoulder or spine behind shoulder depending on how they are lined up to me. Just something to stop them in their tracks.

The main issue is that most first-time hog hunters don't understand a hog's anatomy. The standard just-behind-the-shoulder shot that will be an effective heart-lung shot on a deer will just result in a gut-shot hog because his heart and lungs are further forward. Here's a a great article, complete with pics:
Feral Hog Anatomy
I killed over 40 hogs in 2008 with the 6.8 SPC and just about all of them were head/neck shots. That's not as hard as it sounds because that area is a pretty large target.

I agree 1oo%,Been hog hunting 12 yrs. with dogs and hobble and stick them. You would be surprised the guys that cant make a good stick.I use a 11" blade and reach where i want.Have seen them with 6" knifes having heack making a good stick. Some dont know of the small marble shape gray looking glands in a hog, clean the guts out and look inside.Easy to spot.Nothing like jalepeno and cheese. links

I agree with Rev and Altez. Aim for the head and you're gonna be fine.

I hit about a 400 lb boar that was running in the side by his shoulder and we never found him. I shot him with a .30-06 180 partition bullet at 40 yds. We looked for a while. Never saw any blood or anything. Shoot for the head only.

Alrighty then. I will do as suggested and take the Head or Neck shots. They are much tougher than the typical Black Bear or Deer it sounds. I shoot on a regular basis so it shouldn't be an issue. A few times a week anyway. If I can't hunt, I am playing Shooting Director of our Gun Club.
I mixed up some Corn, Raspberry Jam (Homemade), and Schiltz Malt Liquor Beer. Packing the car as I type. And heading to where it is warm. I do really appreciate the help. I would have been useing the same target picture as a Deer or Bear. And maybe had some upset wounded Hogs to go after. Probably not good for a rookie. Thanks again. I'll keep checking back.

I plan on useing a Double Bull Ground Blind. Hopefully wind will cooperate. Are their noses as good as I read about? All my tree stands are in Northern Wisconsin. And this was kind of off the cuff trip. Oh well.....

Their noses are good but their eyes are better. I have hit them neck or head & down they go but also a good vital shot worked as well. It all depends on the pig but neck is just about the best place to get them. You can neck shoot them & for amount, bleach out the skull, looks great. If you take the meat to a processor, they mainly have you gut the pig first, some say skinned also.
