I'll admit up front that I'm more of a waterfowler & pig killer, but my wife has never taken a deer before & have these guys coming hitting a feeder on the ranch (AR county).. Not the best angle in the first pic, but does anything look like a shooter to you boys? They all look younger to me, but what do I know... She's not looking for a trophy, just a nice first buck.. Your thoughts are appreciated..

Here's the one I'm after.. Fool is taunting me..

To me, any legal deer is a great first deer for someone. Just to get them to see what its like and get them hooked on the sport just my .02

I would pass up all the deer and shoot the coyote.

The first one that presents a good shot and she gets excited about (and is legal if in an AR county). Age and size doesn't matter unless it is part of the ranch rules. Go out, enjoy and get her a deer cheers

Tbone, went through this with my wife last year, only took near 25 years to get her in the stand behind a rifle.

I had a 1st time buck show up last year, had some broke tips, but was an older fella, I knew as soon as I saw him, I needed to get her in the stand. She agreed and took him the next am and was on cloud 9.

I ultimately let her decide when she was behind the scope, so you may just need to get her out, look them over and let her decide out of whatever AR qualifier presents itself.

Last year my wife shot her first buck. I was with her in an AR county and a 3 point came out. I put the binos on him and told her that he was legal to shoot. She didn't/couldn't shoot him. After he walked off, low and behold another 3 point came out and she did not hesitate when I told her she could shoot.
She was proud of this buck and herself, but she says that she wishes she had waited for a trophy. (one for the wall). If I had it all to do over again, I would have helped her wait it out for the one SHE wanted.
Moral of the story, talk to her alot about what will make her happy. More than likely she wants a big one, just as bad as you do....

Yep. That dark boy on the left in the first pic might do.

And whack that coyote pronto!

i started my wife on a spike then a ratty 8, then a 120" and last year she shot a 135". so this year she is getting a 140" come to think of it, she has killed more bucks in 5 years than i have. hammer
i started her this way as not let her get spoiled. just my opinion and how i was brought up.
at the end of the day, as long as mama is happy who cares!
