I came across a SW Model 19-4 that I would rate as excellent in 357 Magnum. Owner just wants to get rid of it and use it in trade on another gun I have. I was wondering if anyone knows what this thing is worth. Thanks Numbers and markings on gun: Mod 19-4 Cylinder swivel number B18 04279 Smith and Wesson SW 357 Magnum Made in the USA Marcas Registradas Smith and Wesson Springfield, Mass. Is there something on the serial that would help with dating the gun? I assume so. [img:left] [/img]

Need the serial number from the bottom of the frame to date it. The number you list appears to be an assembly number, it does not fit the S&W serial number pattern. Late 70's to early 80's is an approximate range for the -4.
Good ones start in the $450-$500 range and go up from there depending on condition and if the box and paperwork are present.

I would value it at $600-650 pending the following.
1 it is pinned and recessed 19-4 2 it is at least 95% plus without any rust, freckling, or pitting 3 the shorter barreled snubbed bring a little more on the classic P&R SWs

OK, so serial is 78k4569
I have read about the pinned and recessed barrel, what exactly does that mean and how do you tell? Thanks BTW, this gun is rust free, no flaws (I would say bluing is 95%, only a bit or wear line on cylinder), owner says it's probably been shot 12 times. It really is a nice piece for a 30YO gun. The only reason he showed it to me is because I have a Steyr 9mm he wants to trade for. The Steyr has 5 mags and I think about $600 was spent on it. I've always want a revolver and this seems cool.

A 78Kxxxx serial is 1980.
I don't know the value of the Steyr, how much was spent on it is not a valid way to set price. Check Gunbroker for completed sales.
Hard to judge without seeing it but a 19-4 would have to be VERY nice to pull $600 and would have to have the original box and papers. A 95% would be worth $450-480 tops.

Cool thanks. My gut was telling me anywhere from $300-450 would be fair. The gun has no paperwork and no box. It is in great shape, however... I would even venture to say 98%... The only wear mark on it is the slight scratch that forms around the cylinder and it is really faint. Gun is tight and no signs of powder residue or dirt at all.

That's a good looking Smith.
