I am very pleased with the 6mm250 that I had done a few weeks ago, built on a Savage platform, premium Douglass semi heavy barrel, 1-8 twist, been waiting for cooler temps to get to our range. by the way ITD custom guns did the work

Why not buy a .25-06 and have your 'smith shorten and rechamber it? It's a whole lot cheaper in the end.

That! might worth looking into...thanks. Ron I would expect it to be $200 or less. I generally charge $150-$175 and I rent all of my reamers and guages, so if your 'smith has them in stock, it may be less than that.

Colt, look on the butt pad or the side of the barrel and see if it sez U S Repeating Arms aka USRAC, or Winchester.
USRAC was an interim ownership that only lasted a couple years that took over production at the New Haven plant during the break up of The Winchester Company. The ammo plants went one way under Olin Corp, who was driving the deal as ammo was 90% of the revenue stream, along with the Miroku Japanese made O/U's & SxS's, and the BA Rifle & US Made Lever Action, Shotgun & Rimfire Company went under the USRAC name, along with the re introduciton of the Featherweight line.
Both USRAC and later Winchester made an XTR line, which was a styling package & Push Feed only series.
FN Herstal bought out the New Haven Winchester plant, and later re org'ed the line under Browning's management & renamed that company as BACO of Morgan UT, closed the New Haven plant in a labor dispute and to avoid the lawsuit over the Patent infringement on the royalty to the gun writer who claimed ownership of the WSM concept on the intro of the WSM's..and moved M70 et al production to the new FN South Carolina plant after a couple years per the settlement is what I heard. Ron, found the info on the model 70 XTR, over looked the first time, made only 1yr 1986

Colt: could you post a picture of your rifle? I've never seen, or even heard of, a M70 sporter XTR in 257. Thx.

Why not buy a .25-06 and have your 'smith shorten and rechamber it? It's a whole lot cheaper in the end. I specifically wanted a 1-8 twist, its kind of like "you like ford, I like chevy" In that case, you could buy a used Savage and rebarrel it to any twist you want and probably still come out cheaper than trying to buy an existing rifle in .257 Roberts. They're hard to find and usually expensive when you do.

I have one of the special run winchester featherweight model 70's. From two years ago. Those were running for about $800 two years ago. Maybe you could find a gunshop that still has one left. Or someone who could part with theirs. Otherwise I would go kimber I think. If I found a kimber with nice wood I might part with mine but I find that in texas a 257 is about all you need. So might need 2!

Winchester M70 are around in 257 Bob, as are Kimbers. Only problem I see with them is price. 1300 is a little high for the Cabela's 50th edition IMO but are nice rifles. They do have a M70 super grade for only 50 more in 7x57.
Buds has a Ruger #1 International in 257 Roberts for $1073
Cabelas in Allen has about a half dozen of the Cabelas Classic Super Grade Model 70s in stock-they are pricey though as you point out.
