There's a thousand different ways to run with this.. What are your intentions for it? What caliber(s) are you looking at? Wood or synthetic stock? Want NV scope? How much of the budget do want to put toward the rifle? Do you reload? Etc..

I don't want you to tell me what I should do, I want you to tell me what you would do....and why.

Let's say I want to hunt elk and pronghorn, mostly in New Mexico and don't reload. I like a wood stock but I'm open minded.

The last rifle I had for this was a Ruger 77 mk II in 300 won mag with a Leopold vari x2. I might get another one but I'm not sure.

Remington CDL SF in .257 Weatheby topped with a VXIII

That set up just screams heck of a hunting rifle set up.

Are there better scopes, yeah but the VXIII just goes more alof the lines of "huning scope" to me.

The CDL SF looks awesome

The .257 Weatherby because everybody has a .270

A JP, because they're the best. Vortex Viper 1-4, because that is what I have and the whole budget would be spent on the rifle.

Blued Tikka T3 in 7mm 08 for about $540. Replace tupperware stock with B&C for about $250. Talley mounts for less than $50. Meopta Meopro 4-12x50 for about $600. Great rig for less than $1500.

$2000, huh? That's a fair amount.

Probably a Sako 85 or Finnlight in .300WSM with a Leupold VX3 on it. (Probably slightly over budget so just find a good used one.)

I'd start with a Winchester M70 Extreme Weather in 300WSM which is good medicine for any big game in NA.
That leaves $750 to $800 for scope and mounts of your choice.

One of those new shooter hunter nightforce scopes would be at the top of my list..
then the rifle I would get a stiller action and a Brux barrel, and a jewel trigger, and a hs precision stock.

take it all to stick and have him build it..

you would be just over $2k

325 for a used Remington 700 adl. Sell the tigger for $30, stock for $15 and barrel for $10 so now you have a donor action for $270. Buy a used HS precision stock for $250. Send the action and stock to horizon firearms. For $700 he will rebarrel with a hand lapped benchmark barrel, true the action, bed the stock and cerakote. Add a timney trigger for 125. Total for the rifle is $1350. That leaves you $650 to add a scope. Get a used leupold mark 4 or used Swarovski z3. Might come in a hundred over or so but it gets you pretty close.

If you want to just go buy a gun I go with a tikka t3 and spend the rest on a Swarovski z5 3.5-18x44.

I recently bought a classic Brno 22F Mannlicher carbine in 7mmm Mauser it weighss 7lbs even with it's current ancient Balvar scope it's at a smith's being fitted with Warne bases and QD rings. It'll be topped with a Minox 1.2 x 6. It fits how I hunt, I'm in MN so shots tend to be short and quick, I shoot out of ladder stand so I don't want a lot of barrel. When I hunt in Texas I like spot and stalk, it will still be be close to 7lbs when I get done, so it lends itself to carrying.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Remington 700 bdl wood stock, 30-06 with VXIII scope and adjusted trigger to 21/2 lb. pull. Because it shoots straight and I can depend on it. Priced right. up

.257 Weatherby Mag just because it was reportedly Roy's favorite of all his babies. That won't cost more than $500, though. Throw on a Loopy 3-9x40 VX-1, we're up to $750 or so. Harris bipod, up to $820 +/-. Dies, press, (because you shoot a Weatherby) about $200. First box of Weatherby ammo, $90.00 +/-, so we're at what, $1,110.00? Leaves plenty of room for a nice sling.
