Looking for a good spot to go duck/goose hunting. I've been a pheasant, quail, and dove hunter for years and would love to try a duck/goose hunt. I am looking for ideas of spots to go, or just a good guide day. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

crickets chirping is all you will hear here. send a PM or at least be more specific about where you are looking to hunt.

Went to google...typed in lubbock goose hunting...and problem wasnt solved...looks like the typical goose hunt was $200. I personally don't think goose or duck hunting should cost an arm and a leg.

that is pretty much the norm... and you get what you pay for. The cost is not so much the guide it is paying the land owner for the hunting rights. I can promise you the guides arent makeing much money for 200.00 per gun. Also tips are the norm if you have a good hunt.

Thanks for the info 'nogeese' and 'easton1025'. Would it be easier to call up a land owner myself and go at it. I know I don't have any dekes or many calls, but sure seems like the way to go. Self guided usually isn't the way to go, but here to save money it seems like it might be. Just curious?

Anyone know of a good spot in the lubbock area for geese? I have talked to many on the upland side that say to just go out and knock on some doors of land owners. Or to call up some small town lions club places. Any one think this would work on the goose/duck side?

Sounds a helluva alot like your asking for Filet Mignon on a ramen budget. Hunting aint cheap. It is what it is. There isn't anyone on her who likes it anymore than you. Knocking on doors isn't going to do you any good if you don't have decoys, blinds, calls, experience. You will spend much much more on the gear than 400 for you and your boy. However, if you think its something you might get farther into, then it could be beneficial. but it would take alot of hunts before the "break even" period set in. I would recommend your local DU or delta chapter. make friends with other waterfowlers. There are a ton of goose hunters out there who would take you out once they got to know you. Be friendly and gracious. And in the meantime, pony up the cash or find a place to hedgerow em. Good luck and if I was closer I'd help.

I could not have said it better.

I'll add to it. Going on a guided hunt does cost a lot but for many...even those that have been on a lot of goose hunts and that are more than capable of doing it themselves there still might be a lot of good reasons they would go on a guided hunt. The main thing is time...I personally don't have the time to drive all over looking for geese. The best goose hunting areas are not where I live so I'm looking at at least a 3 hour drive down south or 4 to 7 hour drive up north. Once there I would not have time to go "knocking on doors". It's not always that easy anyway since a lot of good places will already be leased out.

For me I pay for the right to hunt a spot that has hopefully been scouted out by the guide that has birds...which means there is a good chance we'll get some birds in the bag. Having a guide with good decoys, calling skills, and a dog doesnt hurt either.

One of these days I hope to have more time to be able to do more nonguided goose hunting.

How much cheaper do you think it should be?

I would hate to think about how much I spend each year duck hunting. Not only do you spend money, but also alot of time is put in scouting and building blinds.

I think to the guy that hasnt been on too many goose hunts the cost would be shocking but after you start figuring out what all it entails the price makes more sense.

I guess the best thing is to know a guy that invites you to a private place they own, lease, or have access too. But that takes time and networking skills. Even then it's not exactly free...you need to take care of the person who invited you.

I appreciate all of the feedback. I understand that it is an expensive sport/obsession. I guess I am more understanding now of what it takes to be good and have a good time. I just wish there weren't so many barriers to get into it. Seems like to have a helluva time I need to shell out the dough. Take in guns, ammo, gas, clothing, guide, etc, etc...this list could go on and on. Seems like it would be easier to pay someone to bring me a duck. Then there wouldn't be any fun in it. Again, thanks for the feedback. All was taken and helped quite a bit. If you guys ever need a tag along, I would be more than interested. Seems like you guys sure could teach me alot. Always a student of the game!!

Kingbert, look up the hart texas chamber of commerce, we just got back from a week 1/2 hunting trip up there. Limited out on geese and ducks, the pheasants were scares. Total expenses were $1500.00 and i limited on my spending. Hunting permit cost $100.00
Any fun will cost you one way or another, and that aint including decoys, rino and such that tag along with the game.

Good Luck.

Thanks Walter. I contacted them over the weekend. Looks like they have a group that needed a couple of people so I threw my name in the hat. Have not heard back, but am keeping the fingers crossed.
