I hunt central texas hill country and wanted to see what you have found is best seed for food plots? Our place has mosrly sandy loam but a little black dirt on creek bottom.
What sedd mixes do yall have the most luck with? What brand of seed?

They are a long way from me and the shipping is as much as the seed. Any other suggestions?

The guy was really helpful but for my 2 acres it was going to cost almost the same amount to ship as it was for seed. Not going to drive 4 hours to get it either.

Just find a good quality of crimped oats, don't buy any seeds that are
treated with chemical coatings! heard they are not good on some birds.
Hopefully we can have some timely rains later this year.

The people at callahans get other seeds from turner and said he would get some on his next order for me. I like using local if I can

I don't know how much time or trouble you want to go to, not to mention ground preparation. So here goes:
if you don't want to do any prep work (soil) throw and grow/noplow they say all it needs is good soil to seed contact.
Now if you have the time and equipment to bust up some dirt that opens up a whole nother world. A&M does soil samples cheep do it.
My experience is you can never go wrong with oats or chicory however and can tolerate some high variations in soil conditions. I have a hilltop plot: Sandy, 5.8 PH, that I disk up and used to plant Whitetail Extreme in part of, this year I am going with oat and chicory. I like Whitetail Institute/Ray Scott products especially for small areas. A lot of folks say its all the same but I don't know I always have been one to stay with the big dogs and those are WTI & Tecomate.
BE CAREFUL when messing with food plots they are addictive they seem to multiply and get bigger each year.
