I handgun hunt when I'm not bowhunting. And had posted about a short range rifle (under 100 yds) for the wife and kids. Talking to a buddy from high school and it came up, why don't you just let em use one of your handguns? Now we are talking about my wife who is a proficient handgunner on the range... And my 12 yr old daughter who's only shot a ruger mark 3. Now I have a 10mm, 44 mag and 357 I hunt with. My buddy said he's let his kids use his handguns hunting since they were 8. Seemed crazy to me. But kinda thinking on it now. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't dream if letting somebody under 16 hunt with a handgun. Nothing will turn a kid off hunting more than a)constantly missing or b) making a bad shot and having a deer run too far and you lose it or c) making a bad shot an watching a deer suffer for 20 minutes. Too much margin for error as far as I'm concerned.

Back home in West Virginia, you have to be 21 to hand gun hunt.

I consider hand gun hunting to be more of an expert deal, so I wouldn't let kids/teens hand gun hunt.

Those were my thoughts. I thought it was crazy. Just figured I'd make sure I wasn't the only one.

It's your call but I've seen younger kids that are very comfortable around hand guns. And most of them were a little careless as well. Directly supervised it would probably be fine. Alone in the stand . . .

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

How good are they? I've been killing pigs and such since I was 14 or 15.

This. Plus the safety factor. Just no sense in it.
