I have tried to fight this for as long as possible but resistance is futile. I need a 1911. It would probably just be a range and safe queen. I know 1911's are rarely cheap but I am looking to do the best without breaking the bank. I am looking at spending $700 max. The ones I am looking at are Rock Island Tactical 2 (w/ vz grips and fo front sight), Ruger SR1911, Remington R1, Taurus PT1911, and Springfield Range Officer.
The ones I am most strongly considering are Ruger and the RIA.

The Range Officer is a very good starter 1911. It is built to be a recreational handgun with the potential to be upgraded to a competition gun.

I strongly recommend the SR1911. I know 3 people who went and bought one within a week of shooting mine. One of those even sold a colt 1911 to do it.
The rock island tactical is also a very good weapon. The trigger is good but not as good as the ruger. I do not like the ambidextrous safety on my RIA. It looks cool but I don't like the fact it's exposed during carry. That shouldn't be an issue for you if your only going to use it as a range gun.

For that price the ruger or if you can find an Israeli made magnum research they're my favorite for the around $700. I think the ruger is a much better pistol than the remington

Mil spec, range officer, used colt. Anything less is pissing money away on a half [censored] 1911.
Go ahead and save your money up for a les or Wilson.

I like the quality you get on the Springfield but I really don't like those blacked out rear sights. I am a 3 dot sight guy.
I have read a lot of mixed reviews on the Magnum Research so I am not sold on it.
I have heard so many great things about the Rock Island, and a few negative things as well, but for the value it just seems like you can't beat it.
I have heard lots of good things about the Ruger as well, it does have a better finish and is American made which is a huge plus, but is it $200 better?
Since this will just be a plinker/range gun I am not looking for Wilson/Les Baer level price range. I can't swing that.

You want a plinker that is reliable....I have 3 of these...2 are NIB and the other one i shoot the sh*t out of.....great shooter, really fun at the range....look at the attached....I made an offer at Buds for $409 and got it....free shipping to my FFL ($15) too....

I haven't heard enough about the Tisas. Not enough reviews and info out there to convince me.

My 17 year old has wanted a 1911 since he was small, I've never had an interest in them. Finally broke down in April and bought him one. Liked it so much I bought one for myself. Both are RIA Tactical II FS .45's. They have been great and I'm hooked on RIA. I've read enough about the TISAS though that if there was significant savings over a RIA I would try one.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

For $700 I'd go with the Ruger. It's a good gun for the money. Or, as said above, buy a used Colt.
