Has anyone ever dug a hole and placed a plastic pool in the hole to hold water? I was wondering how efficient it would be if you placed it ground level, and at the bottom of a funnel/slope. Would it help hold enough water for the deer if you didn't have a pond on your land, or would it collect a lot of sticks/trash and not be worth your time.

I did this with a split 55 gallon (plastic) drum in a little low spot in a feeder pen a few years ago. I split it long ways. Dug them in and filled them whenever I went to the lease but any little rain would put water in them and the deer used it pretty good.

I did the 55 gallon plastic drum too. Them barrels are pretty tough. I split mine about 60-40 and buried the bigger half. The other half had a big hole in it. I put another drum at the back of the truck and will fill it with water. Then just tip it to fill the one in the ground. And yes it collects dirt and crap, and was been cleaned out plenty. That barrel has been in the ground for 5 years now. I bet a pool would work, just not as tough as a drum.

Pool would work but I think the hogs would tear it up in short order. You can buy the small pond liners and do about the same thing plus be much tougher.

That could work and don't worry about sticks n stuff natural mud holes have plenty of that stuff in them.
The best set up I've seen was one of those big containers that lots of people are using to haul camp water. They had the valve open to drip as slow as they could get it to drip. They dug a whole and put a metal stew pot in it to hold the water.
He said he just brought a 5 gal can or two every time he went down.

Set this one up on my spot a couple weekends ago. The tote holds 300 gallons. I have another tote I leave at the camp to transport water to this one. [img:center] [/img]

That is a cool setup. It would be interesting to know how long that will last.

I did something similar and connected to a yote...failed..to much water surface, it will become a Coon and Porcupine Water Park filled with Poo..You are much better to get you a tote and use a plastichorse fence water from TSC w a simple float that is protected. IMO This failed, unless you enjoyed scraping out Porcupine Feces and I wired mesh over the float to keep the coons but they eat thru it... Think you better off w a smaller water surface.. Need to zoom in a Tad, sorry

Scooter, iirc, I have seen that truck just a few weeks ago and it SURE WAS "PURDY" I agree if your going to have a ground level trough, smaller seems better just to control pollutants like poo and dirt. I use a standard livestock trough, one is about 26" or so tall and had a nice 16" at one time, coons could still get up the side, but cant play in the water as well. I do leave a floating log in to keep animals like squirrels and birds from getting stuck and becoming "floaters". I live here, so it is much easier to keep full than it is for allot of y'all though.

I didn't have a coon problem in Hamilton Cty. We killed everyone we saw. Traps, .22s, poison. Took them out.

Thanks Guys. We had 4 of these set up on my last lease. We kept them inside a feeder pen. The deer and animals drank from them and the water stayed pretty clean.

Will replace with a smaller horse waterer next time.
