Hey guys i am going on a hog hunt this weekend around Hamlin, close to Abilene. Anyone know how good the hog population is out there?

Is the best time to get them during the night, since its been so hot lately???

Just depends on exactly where you're hunting at. My ranch is about thirty miles from there and I'm overrun with hogs, the next ranch over hardly ever sees one. That one is hard to call.

Night time is best starting around ten and later, morning is good to catch a couple hours before sunrise or if later you can catch them headed to their bedding area. If you have limited water you may want to stalk the tanks around midday and you might get lucky. My last weekend hunting trip I killed one early evening, two midday at the pond it was around 100 degrees and one around 7 in the morning headed to bedding area

Our place is South of Abilene about 30 miles- We see them at night but the piglets are up and moving in the early morning hours to. Sometimes I scope out where I see young hogs int eh morning then stake it out that night because they never go too far from where the group is- they roam out at night and come back an hour before dawn or so on their way to shade up for the day and I catch them then.

In short- find out where they shade up and wait for them to come in- in my experience it's more reliable than trying to figure out where they are moving to next.

My lease is about 30 miles NW of Hamlin...lots of pigs running around up there. Been seeing them early morning just at sunrise and then about an hour after sunset. Good luck on your hunt!
