If you go on a Pheasant hunt with an outfitter do you tip them? If so how much? I have never gone with one before.

OK I'll start it. I guide at a couple hunt clubs in the area. I almost always get tips. I'd have to guess the average tip is $20 per hunter. The hunt club makes the most money, and that's right since they own the land. As the guide, I average around $25-$50 per hunter as pay from the hunt club. This is for a half day hunt. I own the dogs, I feed the dogs, I arrive at least an hour and half early and stay late to clean the birds and clean up. The tips are appreciated and help to defer costs. I don't guide to make money, I guide because I love to work my dogs, meet people, and show folks a good time. When I've gone on deep sea fishing trips, guided hunts, etc. I tip and try to be generous because I know there's much more work going on behind the scenes, before and after the trip than just the hunting/fishing time. In a couple of hundred hunts, I've only NOT been tipped once, but I knew from the start at that hunt that no matter what happened those folks weren't going to be happy. If it were me, I'd tip at least $50 for full day hunt and more if the guide works hard, provides you the best opportunity to shoot some birds, then I think a bigger tip is better. Sorry for the long post...

I hear you. When I was guiding wages were $100 a day and room and board. But, I had to use my truck and fuel I paid for. No, I didn't expect tips, but if a guy can afford 3 grand plus for a 4 day hunt and I have busted my hump for him and they have several opportunities to shoot good bucks then I think pretty much anything less than $50 is basically an insult

No these weren't once in a lifetime he saved and scrimped to get there hunts either

There probably isn't an answer and you gonna read all sorts of lame pablum about how it's a tip for service, blah, blah, blah. I mean these same dudes don't hesitate to lay out 15 percent plus at a restaurant. Why is 5% too much for the guide?

Guiding is probably something you will never be able to raise a family on, but a little extra income doesn't hurt anyone.
Maybe the manager of the hunt club should mention it to the hunter that you work for day wages and TIPS!!

Dunno what ekse to tell ya. Good luck with it.

If you get good service and you feel the GUIDE did his/her job well...then tip.

Agreed, I don't make much but it's a little extra cash in my pocket. I wasn't complaining, I was just giving an example of guide experiences and my own personal pay. His original question is should he and how much should he tip. Short answer is 15% and up.

When I do guided hunts. The price of the hunt is 650 per day per hunter and includes food and lodging. I would say the tips average 20%.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

ALWAYS tip! Unless the service was really bad. I used to manage a large hunting operation in S TX and can tell you from first hand experience. Hunters that don't tip or tip very little are remembered almost as much as the big tippers.

How hard the guide worked is really the determining factor. I've gotten tipped from $20-5K and remember the bad tippers as vividly as the big ones. A tip is your appreciation for the experience.

The last year I worked in S TX, I was paid a base salary of $24K for managing the ranch (by the boss) and $53K in tips. It's what the guide is or should be working for. IMO for a pheasant hunt probably $50-100 per day would be a good tip or as tigger said about 20%.

As a Whitetail guide you have to love what you do because at the end of each hunt there is not always a rainbow. The owner of the ranch pays me 10% of the kill fee on a 1500.00 deer thats 150.00 for two full days of hunting and yes I feel I work very hard for my money and to make sure the hunter had an enjoyable time because I want them to come back. Tips sure help when I am guiding a doe or cull buck hunt that cost 200.00 dollars I make 10% of the kill fee which is 20.00 Like I said you have to enjoy the work which I do. If it were my full time job I would be looking for another.

If you're hiring a guide... pay the man... or woman. a lot.

They will teach you a lot, and soon you won't need one.

My standard tip is $20 for a half day hunt. I've been on hunts where I didnt kill a bird and still tipped because of the effort. I've been on hunts where I didnt think the guides really did their homework (very obvious as in one got lost and could not find the area we were hunting and then said he didnt get a chance to look at the area the night before) and I've still tipped.

If I have a really bang up hunt I'll tip more. The most I ever tipped was on a duck/goose hunt where I tipped $40 plus gave the guide a half a box of shells plus bought him a nice lunch.

Most of the time I view a full day hunt as two hunts so I go in expecting to tip at least $20 for the morning and $20 for the afternoon.

Wow. I have never been on a Guided Hunt so this is great information. I always assumed the guides got the majority of the fee. But you know what assuming does. I will be sure to Tip if I ever use a guide.

I recently went on a fully guided and outfitted Pheasant hunt with Calamus Outfitters in Burwell, Nebraska.

Adam Switzer was my guide and did an outstanding job. His dogs are second to none, loads of birds, great accomodations and food.

This is a family owned (Switzer Ranch) operation that caters to smaller groups or individuals, like myself. He not only has excellent Pheasant hunts, he has tons of Deer(they took a 170 class in 2008), Prairie chickens, Grouse,Quail and Waterfowl.

I gave Adam a $200 tip which was 15% of the trip price($450/day). I got way more than my moneys worth and am going back this Fall.

Usually, if you get really good service, 12-17% is in the ball park.

Their web site is www.calamusoutfitters.com
