Thinking of maybe getting into 3 Gun competitions. I have all the guns, mags, and gear to start. Might have to buy a couple of things, but not much.


Are there any competitions held in north Texas area?
How much ammo does each competition use?
How are the prize tables do they have good prizes?
Does anyone shoot 3 Gun?
Also my AR15 I'd be using would he a 10.5" SBR with aimpoint T1. All the AR15's I see used in 3 gun are 16"-20" with adjustable magnification scopes on them. Would my SBR be useless?

Do they have a Hefty or Rubbermaid division? You'd kill 'em in that.

Google search for matches. There are plenty in that area. There aren't prize tables for small matches, and if you're starting out that's the last thing you should be worried about. Most guys run between 16" and 20" barrels. You need a scope with more low end than high magnification. PM me if you want more info.

I did a google search and all it came up with was chl classes and gun stores in the area. Yea I'm guess I am putting the cart before the horse with the prize table lol. I could build me another 16" upper with a 1-4 or 1-6 optic on it. That isn't a big deal. Thanks for the info.

Off the top of my head I know they shoot in waxahachie an witchita falls. Look into USPSA too.

Also there is a monthly match at Best of the West range in Liberty Hill,tax each month.
As mentioned these are just monthly matches and there are no prizes just good competition and only the bigger matches which cost more. These above mentioned are 40.00 and 30.00 per match respectively and the big prize matches cost 300.00 give or take.
I have only been doing it for a short time but it is lots of fun albeit expensive as you burn thru some ammo.

Your 10.5" will be fine. I use an 11.5" piston upper with 1-4x scope and can hold my own with the guys using race guns at the local match I go to. I'd rather have a slight disadvantage using a gun made for CQC than to try to shave a few seconds with a long light build that isn't good for anything other than competition (that may just be me though)

That's kind of what I was thinking. I can make accurate hits with my SBR with the red dot. Might get me a 1-4 in a nice QD mount so I can swap optics out.



Thanks for the links guys I'll check them out. At the moment I'm just looking for smaller local matches that are cheap to try out. the $30-$40 entry fee is very appealing. I was also worried about how much ammo I'd burn through. I have a ton of ammo, but I'm a hoarder and hate shooting ammo up without replacing it, so I fear it will get very expensive on that front LOL.

Thanks I'll look into the USPSA, I think I've looked into it before but never started it. Would really like something that encompasses carbine, shotgun, and pistol, but I guess just starting out with pistol shooting would be good too.

Shotgun reloads is what kills most people for time..

Yea I've been watching a lot of videos and looks like the shotgun reloads are what gets everyone. I'm terrible at reloading a shotgun quickly. Lol duck hunting and trying to throw a couple of more shells in before the ducks get away.. Don't know if its the stress or what but it always seems very very slow haha.

Look into the taccom load two. Don't bother with anything else. I can load 12 in 7 seconds when things go like they should. I highly recommend you shoot some pistol matches first to get a bearing for the game. Many things from USPSA cross over into three gun. I will not even bother to address the statements about the three gun rifle being useless.

The guys that win are usually running 18" rifle length gas systems with a comp, 1-4/5/6 scope and a good trigger..

You can shoot much faster with one tuned right than a standard carbine.
My 3 gun rifle is just that, a tuned "race gun"

18" rifle gas with adjustable gas block, lightweight JP carrier, JP captured spring, 1-5 Steiner
My other 5.56 is a 14.5" middy lightweight build with a T1, suppressor mount/flash hider.

Both run the same Wilson Combat TTU single stage trigger.
I took out the Hyperfire 24c yesterday and replaced it with with a 3lb Wilson as I wanted my 3 ARs to have the same trigger for consistency.

Anyways, a dedicated comp gun is much faster putting multiple shots downrange as the sight doesn't move nearly as much.

A lightweight shorter rifle feels faster but the shot timer and score tells a different story.

I wouldn't want to carry my 3 gun rifle all day but 3 gun matches are more like stand around 5 hours and shoot 30-90 seconds once an hour !

TDSA in ferris has them second saturday of the month. ITs 30 bucks, need about 150 rounds for each gun. Its awesome!

Dang Ferris looks to be a pretty good haul for me. Was hoping there were some closer that I could try out, before traveling very far to get to them.

What all is required to do enter a 3 gun match? Im assuming most use an AR, semi-auto pistol, and some sort of tactical semi-auto shotgun? I have an AR and plenty mags and semi pistol with a factory mags. Dont own a tactical shotgun. Dont own any tactical vests, holsters, or 5.11 clothing. Dont want to invest a whole bunch just to find out I dont enjoy it.

You don't need a tactical shotgun, I have seen many people use normal bird hunting ones.

You don't have to have vests and stuff, its nice but you can just keep your extra mags in your pocket.

You will need a holster though for your pistol. I have a couple extra vests if you want to borrow them sometime to try it though.

I do it to test my gear and my skills, I am not trying to become a professional.

Lotsa shiny new (unproven) guns choke in 3 gun, you'll see if your stuff works or not.

Why does everyone associate three gun with swat teams?

Shooting and moving, changing from rifle to sidearm, and engaging multiple targets at various distances.

Would you dress like a mall ninja to go play golf? Or to enter a fishing tournament? Or play baseball? It's a game, nothing more.

I'd like to try it out sometime, but I can't seem to find any close to me. Closest 3 Gun I can find is either waxihachi or Wichita falls, both being about 3 hours away from me. USPSA are about the same. I did find an IDPA class in Greenville which is about 1 hour away. Maybe I'll try that.

I did find that Red River Firearms West in Gainesville has several awesome classes taught by people like Chris Costas and Travis Haley, but they are mucho money for the classes. After ammo and entry fee looks like you'll be up over a grand. That's good to know they are there, but don't think I'll ever drop the dough to attend one.

I will say this.. you would probably learn more from one weekend class with one of those guys than a year of shooting 3 gun..

As far as gear:
Run what you brung, don't stress on it..
I find that 3 gunners are very helpful and you can learn on the fly.
As long as you run your gun safely and pay attention to what's going on and the rules you will be fine.

A bit of advice:
Be the last in the squad to shoot a station so that you can watch and learn from the other shooters.

There is a top guy at our last match that did a few "tricks" on how he ran the stage that I was like "duh, that is brilliant"

Most guys can shoot decently enough, but the top guys know how to analyze a stage and run it the most efficiently.


Like Morgan said, it's a great way to test your gear out and learn how to think on your feet under some pressure.
While we all acknowledge it is just a game, it is NOT "tactical/self defense" training, you can learn a lot about your gear and yourself.
