A dumpster full of trash seems to draw them rather well in Ruidoso. Don't see why that wouldn't work in WY.

In areas that I hunt we use a 45 gallon drum anchored on a chain tether. The drum is drilled with holes large enough for dog food to fit through. The bear than rolls the drum around shaking out the dog food. Makes the bait last longer and keeps him on site longer.

If the bears are used to being baited they can sometimes go nocturnal. To prevent this we use a battery operated radio on a timer to play music at night every once in a while.

Other things that we have had success with are fryer grease, day old donuts, popcorn and molasses. When starting a bait I will use vanilla, anise, and carmel extract mixed with water to create an initial scent lure.

If you put a camera on the bait site make sure it is in some sort of protected box as our bears seem to like to rip them down.

The effectiveness of the bait will vary depending on how much natural food is available. Last year baiting in area was not that good as there was a bumper crop of berries and acorns.

Smelly stinky food.
Hog bait should work with them. Same kind of concept.

I am a long way from being an expert but we are having some success. This is my first year to hunt southeast OK bear. If you want to talk PM me and I will drop you a phone number. We are running two bait stations and have bears coming to both.

thanks for all the info everyone! I went into town and got my initial set up. Got six 55 gallon drums for free from some guy so that was nice. Gonna head out first thing in the morning and set out my bait sites and cameras. Going to boil up a mixture of maple syrup, dog good, marshmallows, sugar, honey, and liquid smoke. Then I was told by some hunters in town to pour liquid smoke all around the trees. We will see how this works.... This morning when I woke up I would have never imagined I would be prepping for a DIY bear hunt.

I know they really like Anise (licorice) good attractant, any sweets.

Since there sense of smell is so good, one trick a bear guide showed me years ago. Dig a hole in the ground at your bait station, about the size of a 5 gallon bucket, fill with used cooking grease/oil. As bears wallow and dig in it, they will get it all over their feet, when they leave (could go for miles) they will leave a scent trail, this will put out a signal others will follow back and it will diversify the scent in many directions, not just downwind.

I have a video of bears coming to such stations (his) that followed the oil trails back. They are vhs rough uncut video when he took some ESPN crews in for BB. I know a few biologist that use allot of marshmallows as well.

I have a couple buddies that have them on a lease in South East Oklahoma. They killed 2 last year using a barrel with a hole in the side filled with dog food. Nothing fancy but they had many opportunities to shoot one.

They will come to what ever you put out there, they know no difference unless they are getting something else better from another location, JMO.

After careful review and research of many hours of Yogi Bear cartoons, I have concluded that Yogi and Boo Boo really liked Pic-a-nik baskets. Seems to be their favorite.

People I know do that and also add corn syrup which you can buy in a 5 gallon bucket. They also add used cooking oil or bacon grease if they can get it.

To be determined

not sure why you want to go to all of the work of baiting if your seeing them that often. With the country your in, spot and stalk would be the way to go. I wouldn't waste my time filling bait stations when i could be covering alot of ground. Focus your attention on natural food sources and the travel corridors between there and their bedding areas. I normally wouldn't put the effort into baiting unless it was really thick country that you had limited shooting area in.normally finding bears isn't the issue. its finding a shooter that's tough. hunting bears is kinda a numbers game, you need to see alot of bears so you can see what a big bear looks like.

Justin, I ended up setting out 2 different bait sites about 3 miles apart. I got the barrels and for free and already had most of the bait I needed without having to buy it. Went into town and just bought dog food, liquid smoke, and chains. I'll give it a week and if the fruits from the labor don't start to show, then I'll stick to spot and stalk on the BLM and forest that buts up to our place. Luckily the GMU for our area is so huge that I don't have to worry about different seasons and regulation. Here is one of the baits I set out back in a little cove:

I didn't realize reading about something on the Internet made it gospel
