My friend and I decided to try duck hunting this upcoming season since we already hunt a bit of everything we figured we are missing out. I was just wondering how do you hunt public lakes I have seen people hunting on lake coffeemill and was just wondering what all I need to be able to do this. Also any advice for a rookie would be appreciated

Public texas laking is only good mondays-thursdays.
And be there 2 hours before anybody else.
Most boat ramps are dry, so check the regulations.
Thats all im gonna give you, and thats all you need to know. hammer

1st come is first to be pizzed off! No matter how early you get there, someone is going to come rolling in about legal shooting time (LST) and set up (or try to) 20 to 40 yards from you. Most will get all pizzy about how it is a public lake and they have just as much right as you do.

Public duck hunting in Texas is not for the faint at heart!

I figured this much. But just wanted to try it before paying the money for something I may not enjoy to the same extent as deer hunting since both seasons overlap

You'll spend just as much (probably more) money on duck hunting than you do deer. Public is not easy, but it makes you love it or hate it. You'll know soon enough.

WW its all good man, who knows you might just find that honey hole bud, but all in all sometimes hunting public can be challenging, discouraging and mentally drainging but eventually youll get the hang of it

it takes a lot of scouting and time to learn the rules and regs of each lake and each area. be prepared to do a lot of reading and research at the public area headquarters. There will be quite a few folks out on the weekdays now too with duck dynasty and the weekends getting so packed

I have done the public land deer hunting so I know how it goes. As far as it being even more of a challenge just makes the game of it even more fun.

There are some really good guides on THF that will take you on a public hunt.
I assure you it will be money well spent.
Lance Vick a bass fishing and duck hunting guide helped me get started.
He is a great guy and will answer all your questions.

The problem with find the "Honey Hole" on public is that your great hunt is a dead give away to all within 2 miles of the spot (they can hear the gun fire!). Not many public honey holes stay that way for long.
