I have the opportunity to bow hunt elk in Colorado this September. I've bow hunted white tail in years past but I sold my bow 4 seasons ago with the intentions of upgrading but I never did. Im debating on shooting a traditional recurve or a mechanical. Ive shot traditional before, so thats not an issue. Since we will likely be doing a great deal of hiking I need a set up that is light as possible but effective. However, the last time I shot traditional, I noticed that the bow was greatly affected by temperature and if it was "out in atmosphere" overnight, the dew seemed to reduce the bows "rigid" backbone and made the upper and lower arms pull unevenly. Can anyone make a recommendation on what bow to take traditional/mechanical and any good info on other equipment to take on an elk hunt like this? Thanks in advance

^^^^ up Good comfortable light shoe w/ good socks in Bow season is a must. A light day pack for putting on miles, will also come in handy. Is this going to be PL or BLM?

I have bow hunted in 90* and 4-8" of snow, all in Sept, weather can be the most tricky then, small pack lets you take "extra" light clothing, especially if you hunt hard enough to overnight with the Elk. Done that a few times and it takes it to a whole new level.

Been years since I bow hunted, so cant help you on that, since I used a compound bow.

Good info Western and thanks. I don't think I could camp overnight with the elk as they would certainly bail out as soon as the snoring started.

If you can locate a wallow, set up down, or cross wind and you will get an opportunity if your patient. I took a friend and that's what I did with him, we where packing out "bull" the second evening. He used a cow call to get his attention, shot it at 11 yards with a compound bow.. Plenty close for primitive though.....or pocket knife grin
