Shoot them with a 450gr arrow and broadhead, lot more fun. Don't need no mag. if your going to use a rifle 308 would be fine, 30-06 max.

A 30 caliber rifle that you shoot well should suffice.

TT85, an interior grizzly that weighs 500 pounds is a very BIG bear. Some will get a bit bigger if they live near the coast and have access to a salmon run. Brown bears run quite a bit bigger than interior grizzlies because they have an extra month on each end of the feeding season, living as they do right on the ocean and eating salmon all summer long. Proximity to the ocean moderates the weather significantly and thus the seasons are longer. That said, it would take a truly exceptional brown bear to make 1000 pounds, and I believe (as do many Master Guides) that an average big boar will often weigh closer to 750-800 pounds. Of course, since it's quite rare to find livestock scales in brown bear country a hunter can let his imagination run wild. It is easy to claim your bear weighed 1500 pounds if there is no way to corroborate it!
I've read where domesticated bears and those who live in captivity often top 1000 pounds, but you must understand that these bears are fed daily year-round and almost none of them hibernate. A wild bear has no such luxury.
I have personally killed 4 moose and have seen 3 others dead on the hoof. Every moose I've seen is at least half again larger than any brown bear around, and moose are known to crowd 2000 pounds, although most bulls will go closer to 1500. In the Anchorage airport is Reeve's huge life-size brown bear that is one of the greatest trophies ever taken. By the looks of it, I would guess it would have weighed 1000 pounds, but not much more.
Getting back to black bears, the largest AVERAGE size must surely come from the Pacific coastal areas of western Canada and SE Alaska. Again, here the seasons are long and the fish are plentiful. Scales are also available on docks and on boats. My outfitter has never taken a 400 lb bear, but 300 lb boars are the norm. Interestingly, some black bears taken near human habitation in places like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania grow to gigantic size where the food is plentiful, but on average, they're bigger out west.
All bears are at their very lightest when they emerge from their den after hibernation. Over the summer and fall, they eat and get heaviest right before denning up for the winter. I was talking to some locals that hunt Minn, wisconsin, michigan, Penn etc. They say any bear over 400 in those areas was supplemental feed... lots of baked goods and cookie dough. When you hear off a 600lbs plus, that basically means that it was someone's year long feed project

wow that would be a big black bear, but I call bs unless he meant they get as big as a brown cub lol. lived in se Alaska for years had cpl encounters with black bears that was entertaining. for the most part no fear of them but always cautious 30/30 or equiv be plenty

I I would feel comfortable with a 30-30 and would jump at a chance to carry my 94. Many black and brown bears have been dropped with the good old 30-30 all over North America. Wonder how many were taken with a muzzle loader around .45 to .50ish caliber? The key part is to hit with one shot exactly in a vital area. Sometimes the guides want big bore rifles because their clients can't shoot very well. Shoot a 7mm to .30 caliber Nosler partition bullet or similar accurately in anything from an -08 to magnum and you have a dead bear. Talking black and brown bears, not Grizzly or Kodiak sized ones. Heck my cousin's two girls both took nice black bears with a bow at age 12 in NW Arkansas over the past several years.
To be determined

Some of the biggest black bears come from the Carolina s, agricultural areas. in the fall some have been weighed on certified scales that were over the 600lb mark when laying on the fat getting ready for hibernation. British Columbia coastal and islands have some huge bears also. I agree with JCB my 350 Remington Mag would be my choice for big bears or the 45-70. Of the calibers listed in the OP any would work and I would most likely take the 375 and 338 or 9.3 as a backup or reverse that if wanted. With those 3 you would not be undergunned IMO

I just got back from black bear hunting in Tyonek Alaska. 2 blacks where taken with 30-06 shooting Remington 220 gr. Mine and another buddy took are bears with 450 Bushmasters shooting Hornaday 250 gr. Blacks dropped within ten feet using the Bushmaster. Both blacks dropped within 50_60 yards using the 30-06. Bears ranged in weight 140 pounds to 200. Good luck

I used to own a .35 Remington and got to reading about the caliber one day.
Seems it used to be a pretty popular black bear caliber.

Always thought a .35 would be perfect for black bear and carried one three falls in a row in Arkansas, but never even saw a bear. Sure wish I could say the .35 is perfect, and I think a .35 Whelen is. Just an opinion though, and an unqualified one at that. Some experienced Brown bear hunters think the Whelen is perfectly adequate with the right bullet, and it makes sense to me.

We are on the same page almost anyway, if I ever do a bear hunt the rifle I bought for a Moose hunt if I ever get to do that is a 350 Remington Magnum. Figure if a 225gr partition started at 2700fps doesn't get the job done I must not have done my part of putting it where it belongs. In the meantime it makes a great thumper of hogs. Have killed up to 3 with one shot with it.
For a backup rifle which I always take one of, the Marlin 1895 45-70 would do the trick. Speaking if backup rifles the 350 got put into use in Montana for elk and deer when a scope on the main rifle gave up the ghost, 2 shots one for a nice bull and one for a nice muledeer and the hunt was over.

Its what the caliber was actually made for was a gun that could carry easy and also drop a charging bear with one shot... Bought one from an oldtimer and he had plenty to say about it... love the gun also

Hi all, I am new here. I recently picked up a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington, sure like the gun. The first round I fired from it anchored a gray squirrel.. But I am told it is a great round for deer/bear sized critters.

As someone who has hunted and taken a black bear, .30-30 works fine. I used a Marlin 336C.

Any on your list are more than adequate. Me I'd use the 9.3x62 - just because I think it is a cool round.
