I bought an 870 that has a lot of rust, doesn't seem deep but feels like little bumps all over, not the smooth all over type. I have never had to remove this kind of rust off of a gun before and don't know how so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get it all blast with a media blaster and then have it cerakoted. It will never rust again.

I thought about cerakote but I bought it because it is a match to my 1100, and it was real cheap, so I decided to keep it original. The wood is in excellent shape I just want to get the metal back in as good a shape as the wood

The best way would still be to have it media blasted and then re blued.

Horizon mentioned cerakoting with a mix of black and midnight blue to match the bluing. That could be an option too.

If it is not pitted, just surface rust, use fine steel wool soaked with oil, and coat the metal heavily with oil, removes the rust and leaves your blue. Make sure to apply oil frequently. I have done this numerous times and it always worked well for me.

You can use an ammonia gun cleaning agent such as Blue wonder and fine steel wool to remove and kill rust. This will not harm a blued finish. Just be sure to only apply it to the metal parts ...don't get any on the wood stock or forearm.

0000 Steel Wool and oil. Half the old guns I use were in the condition you are talking about and the steel wool / oil combo brings them back to life.

using 0000 steel wool and lots of oil now, seems to be working but looks like its going to be tedious and it may end up being a little worse than I first thought.. If I decide to cerakote where could I get this done ? I live half way between Dallas and Houston off I 45

The best way to solve this problem is to use number 0000 steel wool and WD-40 to remove the rust. Use only moderate pressure and you will not hurt the remaining bluing. As you are rubbing away the rust, use a clean rag to wipe away the oil and rust to see your progress. I do this every time.
