I ran across the following article..thought it might be of interest to the readers
Tony

The YO Ranch went up for sale Thursday, offering those with sufficiently deep pockets a piece of Texas history while also helping resolve the feud among heirs of Texas Ranger Capt. Charles A. Schreiner, the frontier icon who bought it in 1880.

The asking price is $85 million for the Kerr County spread of roughly 29,000 acres, five residences, a resort lodge, an adventure camp and a lot of other perks, according to the listing published at landsoftexas.com.

“The buyer pool shrinks when you get to this price point, but I feel strongly there's a buyer who will find this to be a very attractive offering,” said Robert Dullnig of Kuper Sotheby's International Realty in San Antonio.

Not included but also going on the market are the giraffes, longhorn cattle and other exotics that have made the Mountain Home landmark a favorite for hunters, campers and tourists for decades, Dullnig said.

Investor will buy it subdivide it in 5 acre lots and sell them for a premium. They will make all the building museums and offices for the HOA

WRS, sorry to hear this. Now a days it seems when more than one person is involved that there is always one or more that will take money over history, heritage, and pride. It really is a sad deal. There will never be another place like that no matter how much money you have in your pockets.
I remember going by the YO as a kid and was amazed! I hope someone will continue on with the YO like it is. texas

After going to the exotic auction there, I hope that place can find an owner that actually wants to keep it up nice. All I saw while I was there was a bunch of deferred maintenance and exotic animals. By exotic animals, I mean the dumb inbreds that are in charge of that place.

I would imagine a place of that size an complexity is probably a difficult management process to keep going and make profitable. It's great to love the land and the animals, and it would be awesome just to work at such a place for someone like me, but too many people prefer concrete and cars over critters and solitude. Even most hunters I know go to the lease and have to run home early Sunday for the "game" or get bored after a couple of days at the lease in the off season. If I had the kind of money it takes to do that sort of thing I would love it but the reality is my wife wouldn't want to live 45 minutes from town. I don't think criticizing the other owners helps as I'm sure they would rather have the money than the headache of dealing with the place and probably don't love the outdoors like WRS. It is sad to see that happening but prayerfully it will work out in a way that he can retain a part of the place and continue to enjoy his love for the land and places.

In my opinion it's a loss anytime one of the great TX ranches goes up for sale. I hope that it is kept in one piece, for many reasons. There's no going back once it's divided up.

WRS-I'm sure it feels like you're losing a member of your family. I was very young when our historic place got split up and sold, but it hurts to recall what once was.

Leave it to family to mess it up!! I say this out of personal experience. I grew up hunting on my grandparents ranch outside of Crystal City, Texas. Property was in the family for nearly 100 years. As soon as my grandfather passed away my grandmother without even asking the family sold it to her neighbor for below market value. We haven't had the same relationship since! So I agree with everyone that I hope something happens and it stays in the family! Good luck!

DSO, if it's her land - why does she has to ask anybody before she sell's it?

It's always best to give family first right of refusal even if you know no one can afford it.

Nah. The good thing about the sales price is it doesn't leave any room for profit doing what you suggest. You can buy 20 acre spots near there for 2,000/acre.

It's either gonna be someone from south Texas that just had his big ranch down there tore up and his pockets filled with greenbacks... or it's gonna be a group that gets together and buys in a divided interest deal (I actually tried to put that one together but the guys I was negotiating with weren't as sentimental as me).

The price is VERY reasonable considering the historical value and brand.

And I agree it's a shame. But it happens to all dynasties. And the Schriener family is one of Texas' best dynasties. If you think about it, the folks like The early Charlie's who built it were committed to it more than the following generations. The YO has in fact survived MUCH longer and through more generations than most do.

Walter is still connected obviously, and sadly it's a heartbreaker for him. But the larger a family gets, the more diverse their wishes and lifestyles become. Unless you set it up in a trust that can't be broken, all large places will eventually be sold. Cold hard nasty facts of life.

And yes, the YO ranch changed my life. I'm 58 years old and I grew up on the east side of Houston and hunted in east Texas during my youth. I used to look at the Outdoor Life magazine ads and marvel at the fact that the YO ranch could guarantee an 8 point buck or better for $250. The $250 was something I couldn't afford and that wasn't what I marveled at.

It was the fact that they could guarantee an 8 point buck that was just plain beyond my comprehension. For the first 5 years I hunted I NEVER saw more than a 6 point buck. That old high fence and the fact that they imported animals from all over changed hunting for the world. Thank GOD!

You wanna know who's more responsible for the best hunting in the world than any one else anyone of us knows?? Walter's grand dads and Walter.

One of my favorite ranch possessions is an old windmill with "Charles Schreiner" on the tailpiece.

My grandmother on my mother side had 200 acres with 100% minerals outside of Gilmer,TX. Back in the early 70's, my dad try to buy it from her for $150.00 per acre. She wanted $250. and dad could not afford it. Shortly after, with out telling anyone, she sold it to Lone Star Steel for $75.00 an acre with all the Minerals! My sister goes out for family reunions right down the road and talks about the oil tankers driving in that property all day long hammer

Oh well,Shee-ite happens nuts

The land had been in my grandfathers family since the Spanish American War. Each generation had learned to hunt and fish, go camping and just enjoy the outdoors on this piece of property. I spent a lot of my life on that ranch with my grandfather doing those exact things and always dreamed of passing on the traditions to my kids and so forth. When my Grandfather passed away my grandmother started talking about maybe wanting to sell the land. I had asked for first right if she ever wanted to sell it so I could keep it in the family. She said ok, then one day she calls and said she sold it to the neighbors. I was heartbroken! So yes she had every right to sell the land because she technically owed it but it wasn't er right to do it behind the families back without giving us the option first. Just my opinion...

My dad sold our family home soon after I joined the service just out of high school. For the area he sold it for a pittance. His to do yes but without a word to anyone first. And it was not near the significance of a piece of hunting land. I think a family should have first rights. I know the place I bought in Missouri was that way. The kids/grandkids had first op. Then I laid down the cash.

you can get a written right of first refusal to where the property cannot be sold until those named in it gets first option.
