New to actually hunting rabbits. I get the whole point of spotlights and favorite .22 to shotgun approach taking the kids and enjoying the experience. I'm needing some info on when is a good time to kill them and favorite dish.

Alot of folks say they have worms this time of year, I remember seeing several on here saying the worms in the summer was just a wives tale. The only time I ever hunted them was in the fall and we gave them all to a fellow lease member, so Ive never cooked them myself. Should be a lot of fun though, and good luck!

You're doing it all WRONG, my man. Turn loose some good beagles and your kids will never want to anything else. As far as cookin, we'd boil em for a while, then either fry em or smother in gray with biscuits.

When its cold is the best time... they are good and fat right now but full of worms more than likely... still don't matter if you cook them good enough... I like to kill them during December and January and grill them slow or make dumplings if I get a few swamp rabbits. Rabbits and squirrel are some of the most underrated table fair in the woods

Early in the morning and late in the evening they move well. A 22 with a good scope and you are in business. We cook ours mostly in a crock pot. They have very little fat and can get tough very easily. I don't crave them, but they are not bad.

Rabbit hunting is some of my favorite hunting ever. I shot 3 over Memorial Day weekend. I've never had trouble with worms etc. I boil the rabbits then cut them up and stew them in jambalaya.

Never had any with worms. I LOVE rabbit backstrap fried, awesome. Dusk and dawn usually is when the come out to the green grass, edges of woods or roads is usually where you will find them. Seen a dozen running a lake in town this evening, if only the yuppies out there knew I was thinking about eating them rabbits

Really good eating. We usually just sprinkle some salt and pepper and throw them on the grill. They do have a small gland on their back legs, right behind the knee joint. It looks like a small fat deposit. If you remove this tiny gland(on both sides, left and right) it shouldn't have any gamey flavor. My neighbors dad always called it "monte", spanish for woods.

I killed 2 Jack Rabbits last Dove season. I still have 1 in the freezer. I found this recipe on the web and followed it, but I increased the portions as a Jack is much bigger than the cotton tail. My kids and wife at it. It is AWESOME. I cut a Habenero in half and let it soak in the stew and then fished out the peppers before serving. That is the only change I made (this is Texas...)

Google the worms. They are in the skin and can be cut out. More important to look at the condition of the meat, and the liver. Spots etc on liver = bad. Again, google and you will find out good intel.

I soaked my rabbit in a salt water brine over night before making this stew. A rabbit that is properly handled, cleaned and has good color will be fine.

I can only imagine a cotton tail would taste even better.

When I go to the ranch to work I make sure and get there at dawn to kill some wabbits. Usually kill 5 or more. Skin them and have my wife's aunt make rabbit stew. Shoot them in the head so I don't ruin any meat.

When I was in high school we used to shoot some when partying and barbecued them with salt papper and brown sugar rub.

I've shot them any time of the year and never had any with worms. I'll be going to the ranch next week. I'll shoot some and check closer for worms. What kind of worms do they supposedly get?

We have always hunted cottontail during deer season. I have seen pictures of cottontail worms and if freaks me out too much to hunt them in the summer. (I am afraid I will actually see one and be a victim of bazooka barfing)
When all of the kiddos are out for weekend deer hunting we will shoot a few dozen from the Ranger, it is a riot.
We grill them up just like dove, stuffed with japs and cream cheese if you like, then wrapped in bacon.
We call them HOPPER POPPERS.
This is an event that even brings guest out for the hunting and grilling.
