I've never been to a gun range that sold alcohol.

OKLAHOMA CITY - City leaders sign off on a liquor license for a new gun range in Oklahoma City.

The rule will be to shoot first and drink second, never the other way around.

The developers at Wilshire Gun made one big promise to secure a liquor license.

“Guns and alcohol will never mix at Wilshire Gun,” said general manager Jeff Swanson. “We have an absolute zero tolerance policy.”

The range will serve beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages, although with a strict safety plan in place.

Swanson said, “Once you have a drink, your drivers license will be scanned and then red flagged and you’ll be prohibited from entering the lanes for the rest of the day.”

Some on the city council argued that guns and alcohol simply shouldn’t mix.

There’s too much potential for trouble.

Councilman Larry McAtee said, “Alcohol is legal and guns are legal. I have a problem with mixing the two.”

Councilman John Pettis said, “Mixing alcohol and guns together in that neighborhood I totally disagree with.”

Despite that opposition, the council ok’d the gun range’s liquor license by a vote of 6 to 3.

The owners arguing their building will be safer than any restaurant in the state.

Swanson said, “Right now in Oklahoma you can open carry into restaurants that serve liquor. We’ve taken steps way beyond even restaurants.”

The owners still have to get approval from the ABLE commission, but that is not expected to be a problem.

As for a timeline, the goal is to open the range in less than 2 months.

JMO, but that is just dumb. Alcohol is legal and so is driving, but you don't mix the 2, kind of the same analogy.
1st incident and it will make national news.

Can't say I agree with it, but the guy makes a good point. If they already allow open carry where alcohol is served, it's hard to build a stance against it that's not a knee-jerk, "NOOOOOOO!!!!"

I used a range when I was out in AZ back in the late 80's that had a bar, kind of like "19th Holes" at golf courses. The difference was that once you'd entered the bar area (with guns in your vehicle) you could not decide to exit and "shoot another few holes." The bar had a one-way entrance and one exit. They had security of sorts in the parking lot and anyone leaving through the bar exit, even if they'd only had a soda, could do nothing but get in their vehicle and leave.

I didn't think this was common. I haven't been to a gun range in about 15 years and the ones I went to didn't have a building or office. I would have remembered if they had a bar.

Perfectly legal and what part about not shooting after drinking are ya'll missing? The bar is completely separate from the range just located in the same building.

These are going up everywhere there is a smidgen of freedom left BTW. There's one in the DFW area (I think it might have been the first), and one in the Atlanta area.

Combo gun store, range, and bar & grill. Awesome concept for those who aren't hung up on legislating morality.

Try that in New York, Cali, or a host of other liberal states. Be glad you live in a state that still respects at least some individual rights.

Or not.

I don't see a problem. If you don't like it, don't go.

I just had never heard of this before. Like I said its been about 15 years since I've been to a gun range and they weren't fancy. It would be pretty nice to have a beer and talk to the other people after a round of shooting.

I don't see an issue with it. Some good points made for the "in favor" and same old argument for the opposition. Just like hunters like to sit around and bs over a cold one, so do shooters. Gives them a place to sit and discuss guns, loads, glass, and whatever else may come up. The range made their stance and rules clear.

But I drink beer when I dove hunt and have even had one in the deer stand, so my opinion probably doesn't count. Had plenty on here tell me how horrible I am for having a beer while shooting at little grey birds confused2

Same rule here in San Angelo. Shoot first then have a beer. Once the beer top is opened no more shooting. Makes good sense to me.

However, I agree with txhunter. When we dove hunt we'll have a cold one. Also, nothing better than a cold one in the deer stand on a beautiful evening. Yahtzee!

I'm cool with the concept......I think. Kinda like the 19th hole at the golf course.

Once the patron enters the bar, he shouldn't handle the firearms anymore.

Just one man's opinion only. YMMV.

There used to be a place on 77 in Schulenburg that was a liquor and gun store. It was called "Double Shot - come on in and get loaded". They even had a drive through!!!

I always wanted to stop - do the drive through and ask "yeah, give me a bottle of Tequila and a box of .308's"

When they closed, I wanted to go by and get their sign - but somebody best me to it.

I trap shoot at a gun club that sells tokens for a round of trap and beer from the same counter. Most guys get a beer or two and wait their turn at trap.
Another local gun range has a pneumatic beer can smasher that automatically dumps the smashed cans in a chute to an outside trash can.
I never-ever saw a single issue at either place that would have made me question safety. And never a guy having more than a beer or two.

Last time I checked, you dont have to blow into a breathilizer to go to a gun range. And if yal think no drunks ever go to the range you are dillusional. I see no problem at all with yhe way they are doing this.
