Just got a lab a few weeks ago and had a quick question...

How prevalent are worms and fleas with puppies?

If you have the yard sprayed and give them baths with shampoo that kills fleas you'll be good. With worms just give them heart worm meds that are appropriate for their size and age. Now post pictures of the cute little bugger.

If they have worms you better address that issue first with your vet, might kill the pup if you give him preventative meds. You might want to elaborate on your question....

so the vet has de wormed him, gave him a pill for the fleas he had, and started him on a monthly treatment

I am just curious how normal this is...i have never seen it on my parents dogs.

I will try to post pics later

Never owned a dog in Texas, that I didn't have to do something to keep fleas at bay. I had a indoor cat in the past that never set a foot outdoors. I still had to put flea meds on her during the summer, or she would have fleas. Puppies seem to be more susceptible to worms than older dogs. I've had pups checked for worms at the vet, and the sample comes back clear. Then had them get, and be treated for worms a month and a half later. I keep a bucket in the yard, its lined with a trash bag. I use it to do poop patrol twice a day. Keeping the yard clean will cut down on your pup getting worms.

Comfortis (spinosad) seems to work best for flea control these days. Trifexis has spinosad in combo with the monthly heartworm preventative. Either product is well worth the expense, IMO.

I haven't had a flea on a dog in years. I keep sulphur on the lawn which drives out fleas, chiggers, and some other bugs. It's inexpensive and works well

I use Revolution on my dogs. It is flea/tick and heartworm preventative all in one.

While Revolution does prevent some ticks from getting on your dog, it does not cover all ticks. I know it does nothing against keep those small deer ticks off a dog.

Lab puppy's are a hoot. Ours is 5 years old and still acts like a puppy when it's time to play.
I always use the generic of the stuff you put on there neck for fleas and ticks, heart worm pills takes care of the rest and never had any issues. We take here camping a lot so she is definitely exposed to all of the above.
