How do y'all keep mosquitos and gnats from ruining your warmer season hunts for hogs and whitetail? Too hot for heavy clothing and can't reek of repellent...anyone have a secret?

We don't have any because we don't have any water for them to hatch.

thermacell and play the wind.
I have seen the skeeters swarm around me but not getting closer than about 10-15'.........until the butain ran out. Then they almost instantly bombarded me. I couldn't get that thing started back up fast enough.

3 choices....
repellent
thermacell
or deal with em.

Yeah, it is scary to sit in a box blind and to see the cloud of skeeters outside of the windows. They know you are in their and they just can't get past the repellent.

Thermacell does not work well for stalking, IMHO. Even on a calm night, you keep outpacing your zone/cloud of protection. Being stationary, it is pretty darned good.

Does NOT do a thing for chiggers.

Thermacell works great for mosquitoes but not really effective on gnats.

If the wind is wrong it doesn't matter what you're using and if you wanna stalk and not get chiggers then do it in February. Thermacell is your best bet for misquitos, vanilla extract is good for gnats, and sulfur around your boots is good for chiggers outside of that staying home or just scratch the bites for a few a days, the itch will remind you of the hunt for the rest of the week, they are like tiny little trophies.

I carry and use a sulfur sock when needed. There are times when being bug free and counting on using the wind vs. scent control is the decision I make. The dry repellant sprays eliminates the oily film and make them less annoying to us as well. If it were easy everyone would be able to do it.

Ever tried a mosquito body suit, I have used a reduced version with a head and hand cover when I was in Alaska and Canada and that worked really well. Lite and airy.

I play the wind, spray on deep woods off and turn on the thermacell. Thermacell alone doesn't take care of the ticks and other flying pests. This year I am also throwing in an insect defense beanie. I hate ticks just as bad as Moe's!

Flame thrower was always my choice of weapon, plus I can torch the ticks as I walk along. stick some marshmallows on the fence barbs, coffee in 60 seconds, Steak in 90 seconds. Hard to beat as all in one tool. cowboy

I bring my Portuguese brother-in-law along as bait. They all just attack him and leave me alone.

My rancher relative used to put dog flea collars around the ankles of his boot for the chiggers.

Do you use sulfur during deer season? It's strong enough to alert the deer, right?

I wanted to use it during the summer when working on the property but was worried about too much scent getting left behind.

Roast a whole clove of garlic and eat it about once every 1-2 weeks, they won't touch you.

Well what I do is plant Citronella Plants around my blind and put a few leaves in my front pocket and one hanging out the back of my hat on my neck, the best natural way to deal with those blood suckers.

cedar oil works well for the mosquitos but they don't usually like me. I tried a mosquito net jacket once in the area with a sleeveless tshirt underneath and just watched as my should would cover with mosquitos and get bit right through it where the skins was touching the net.
