I have seen and hunted javelina in South Texas, but never seen them in North Texas. I am not sure, but these 2 sure look like Javelina. What do you think?

NO Ch**!!, heck I haven't even seen W Hogs (knock on wood) in SW Wise Co, but have seen them 1/2 mile away a couple of times. Javelina and I'd be to shocked to do anything. I do think I would prefer them over the larger bastages though.

Why would TPWD release them in NTX?

I have a friend that booked a hog dog hunt near Wichita Falls and they run across a few of them. The guild said he had never seen them there before.

Why would TPWD release them in NTX? I was wondering the same thing.

I have seen a few pictures from Young County and one from Throckmorton...shocks me every time Hadn't heard that any had been released, explains a lot...just wish someone knew why they would be released. Looks like they were released in a few North Texas Counties (Shaded area with dots. Image from TPWD website)

Very good Grasshopper Now the Million dollar question again, why I thought I'd read about this a while back. I think javies are originally indigenous to N.TX.

I still have my old college mammalogy textbook from my Wildlife Science days at A&M. It shows javelina to be indigenous all the way north to the Red River via a narrow N/S strip around 100 miles west of Ft Worth. In my lease days along the Clear Fork in SW Throckmorton County, we used to see them 2-3 times a year. More than once, while walking and rattling, I smelled them without getting a visual.

Javis indeed! Javelina used to range across Texas from the Red to the Rio Grande.
There are a few running around Mason County as well. Mason Mountain WMA has/had a decent number, and some escaped.
Personally, I'd be excited to have Javis on the place. I miss seeing them.

I have hunted in Wichita and Wilbarger county for 15 years now and every lease I have been on had a small population of them. They make really nice European mounts if you can get past the rancid smell when skinning them.

Interesting, there is a hunting season for them in Wichita & Archer counties and some in the panhandle! I have hunted in Wichita and Wilbarger county for 15 years now and every lease I have been on had a small population of them. They make really nice European mounts if you can get past the rancid smell when skinning them.

Maybe the release is an attempt to have javelina's compete with hogs, possibly keeping hog populations down? Or maybe they got sick of hearing how S. Texas hunting is better than N. Texas...
We have had seemingly the same lone Javelina occasionally on gc in Palo Pinto for the last two years.

We have a handful of them. THey are native and as long as they aren't a nuisance I enjoy having them around. However when they grow to brave and act like they own the place we go on a shooting spree. They really don't eat that bad at all once you get the hide of they are pretty good.

Squaw mountain hunting reserve in Jack county had them 30 years ago and I'am sure some got out of the high fences. Worked on leases on Cherry Holmes ranch east of Jacksboro and saw a lot of them 10 years back. Had a friend shoot one at night while hunting song dogs south of Graham, thought it was a feral hog.

Was an experiment to see if they could extend the range.
