My wife has been asking for a new dog. Her friend fosters dogs and happens to have 2 weim/lab from a litter of 11 the original owner could not sell. they are 6months old. If it were up to me i would be getting another GSP with proven pedigree but this seems like a win-win. She gets a dog and I might a get another hunting buddy out f the deal if he is somewhat birdie. I have a 2.5 y/o spayed GSP that is a good quail dog, steady stylish but not a good retriever (which we are working on). She brought both over yesterday day for a few hours. I told her we can get the male - i had a bumper and he held it real nice and walk around proudly. While they were here, my GSP was all over that bumper haha, i really think some competition will help her retrieving. I grew up with a Vizsla and have owned 2 GSPs from good pedigrees that were natural hunters. Not sure what to expect here. I would to train him as a close working dog and have flush and retrieve quail and also for duck. Any of yal have success with mixes like this? I included a pic of him and the sister. I am trying ti get the contact info for original owners to make sure they are weim/lab, but they definitely look like they are.

I adopted a Lab/GSP mix. He's all chocolate/liver and is a machine. Good luck.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

There are a lot of people out there that would call that a "silver lab."

Who knows what can happen. If you do some training and they stay healthy, you might be able to have a good hunting buddy.

They're sure pretty dogs though!!

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

If you are going to duck hunt, I would check to see if the dog likes water or not. At 6 months, you should be able to tell. I raised weims in college and over half of my dogs (from several pedigrees) did not like water at all. Matter of fact, the weim that I have right now hates water and will not retrieve anything in water. My lab on the other hand loves water and you couldn't beat the "fetch" out of her if you tried.

BTW, those dogs look 100% weim to me. Not saying they don't have lab, but if they do, it doesn't look like much. Pretty dogs.

I don't want to be the bad guy here but from a training perspective there could be a whole lot of issues here. When dogs are with the litter they are learning all the things that they know about being a dog. At first only good can come of this but after a certain point only bad. I would be extremely leery of two litter mates that have been left together for six months. Studies have shown that if litter mates are left together for that long that they tend to bond with one another instead of forming a bond with a human. I am by no means against mixes and have trained a lot great ones for clients in the past. What I do know however is that depending on what was done with these dogs before will have a direct impact on how trainable they are. If they have lived predominantly in the same run together for six months my advice would be to shy away. JMO

ScottH, I think she may be available. Where are you located? We are in Harlingen. I was told they are 50/50. The family breed labs and weims but they accidentally mixed.

I had a Chesapeake/Weim mix. Turned out to be a great dog. Pointed if birds would hold, flushed em if they wouldn't. I try to get crossbreeds only now, as I feel they have more character, and hopefully get the best qualities out of both breeds.

The hunting blood is probably there, and probably wont have the health/physical issues that the individual breeds show.

Good luck!

My experience. Hope it helps...

My first bird dog was a full blood weim. Was my first to train as well and she turned out pretty good. Had a lotta fun hunts with her but had alot of health issues. She only made it till 8 yo and was forced to put her down from a fused spinal column. Next, I had hunted with a guy that had a black lab/weim mix and it was the best dove dog I ever saw. I looked and looked an finally found one. I got her when she was 8 weeks old and took her to the ranch. Went dove hunting that day (not with the dog) and when I came back I threw one of the birds and she retrieved and brought back to my feet. WAS IN LOVE. But so was wife and she got spoiled and became my wife's. SO...I needed a new hunting buddy. Luckily my vet (old school Aggie, copenhagen, with wranglers) bred his GSP with a yellow lab for hunting. He knew I was looking and told me he would give me one for nothing as long as I took it hunting. DONE DEAL. This boy (my first male) is BIRRRRRDEEEEE! Got him at 7 weeks and put alot of time in with him. He will sit under a tree for hours in the backyard waiting for the dove to fall out of its nest. He will go anywhere to get a bird. He is 2 now.

Mind you, I only dove hunt with my dogs and I do the training myself. I am by no means great at it, average at best. But I try to put the time in and make it as fun as possible for the dogs. I believe as long as you put in the work, make it FUN, good memories will follow no matter the breed or mix.

Most dogs can bounce back from being with a litter mate for too long. You just got to put your individual time in with the pup. Just like any pup, they don't live in the past.

Thanks for all the replies. Picked him up on the 13th and is doing great. No anxiety at all. In the last 4 days he has not whined at all in his crate. sleeping all night and naps during the day. No accidents in the house. He does show some possessiveness when towards my GSP when she eats but he really isnt much of an eater. But that seems to have stopped once i got after him a couple times. Is holding and fetching the bumper well with no commands, and the competition as made my shorthair more enthusiastic towards it also.Hopefully i cant get some pigeons for tomorrow and see how he handles birds.
