A few months back I got bitten by the AR bug. My first impulse was to hang everything off of it I could just because I could. By the time I did hang a bunch of stuff on it it grew in weight by nearly 2 pounds, did not really seem practical, and was unwieldy at best. My question is this, if you had an AR and unlimited funds what would you hang off it and why.

I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

Bunch of wise guys in here....
Mine would be close to what I have now.....11.5" SBR with ACE skeleton stock, lightweight handguard, and AAC Suppressor. The only thing I don't have that I want is a really nice 1-6x scope.

You can save weight by selecting the right hand guard and then hang more stuff on the front.
You'd also save weight with a polymer lower and a minimalistic stock but you don't want to be too front heavy.
OUNCES shaved is OUNCES gained elsewhere!
Digisight N750 goes ontop and a green laser and IR illuminator find a home on the hand guard.

Nothing but some good glass or nv/thermal x2 on the thermal. And a good suppressor.

I believe that you need to decide your mission and build your rifle accordingly. I would say that for most uses a 16" rifle with a mid weight barrel would be a good choice along with a flashlight, flip up sights and an Aimpoint, ACOG or Eotech, and add a sling. Keep it basic so that you can ditch the glass/sight system and return to iron sights if need be.
If hunting is your mission, I suggest a 20" with a medium weight barrel, aluminum or carbon fiber free float tube and a scope of choice. There are so many options for configuration, the sky is the limit. I build my own so I can build several uppers to go on a single lower dependent on what I am wanting to do with the rifle that day.
If cash is not a problem, the ACOG is definitely a nice option.

All you need is a decent 1-4 or 1-6 scope. Red dots suck, and 3x is too much for many purposes. A good trigger is a must. Anything more than that is gimmicky and just more stuff to break or rattle loose.

crash700 nailed it...mission drives the gear, and go from there, although I favor fixed rear BUIS when running an Aimpoint.
Unlimited funds? I'd decide on my final AR set-up, and then duplicate it at least once. I'd buy magazines and ammo and get some quality training to learn how to run them well. A spare BCG and other small parts wouldn't be a bad bet, either.

I built the exact gun I wanted sparing really no expense doing it. I run a 10.5" SBR. Very light KeyMod 9" rail. Medium weight match barrel. Aimpoint T1 with QD American defense mount very light compared to other optics. Mission First Tactical minimalist stock which is the lightest on the market. I have a QD suppressor for it so when I want to use it I can.. I took it out hog hunting driving around for pigs. It fits right beside my seat very nicely (without suppressor). Also built me an exact replica of my 5.56 upper in 22LR to shoot cheap. Tons of fun. Without suppressor With suppressor

It all depends on the use and where you're going to carry it

I only hunt pigs, mostly at night, so that drives my setup.
After carrying around lots of crap I didn't need, I started with a clean slate and built as light as I could. I've been using the 6.8x43 for some time and have plenty of reloading componenents for that cal so that's what I used as a base: ARP 16" target crown barrel. Since I am old and mostly hunt from a stand, the rifle is stripped down pretty light with the only add-ons being a N750 on top and a supplemental IR when needed, mounted way out front on the UTG SuperSlim rail - an ACE Skeleton on back makes a light package. I also primarily use 10 round mags as they don't hang up as much.
With a full magazine and no illuminator mounted, it comes in at 9 pounds, 1 ounce.

That's funny, reminds me of a contest I saw on another site a few years ago. "Who can mount the most stuff to their AR?" It got to the point folks were mounting blenders, toasters, and margarita machines to their rails. One guy tried to convince the judges he had mounted his RV to his AR. After some deliberation the decision came back that, no, what he had actually done was mount his AR to his RV.

Everyone is different, but this is all I need for my night time pig stick. Most of the time I don't even carry the 30 rd mags, the 5 rd mags have been plenty for head shooting & less weight.

Good optics/sights. Find what works for you and don't be afraid to spend a bit for the good stuff.
Comfortable stock and grip. Keep it light and comfortable.
Eliminate snag points and sharp edges = quad rails are for TV (I hate the one I have on a rifle)
