Had some extra vacation left this year, so I went ahead and took a couple more days off then usual so I could spend the time from Thanksgiving thru the opening weekend of deer season back home. Went out to northwest KS with three buddies and my dad for some pheasant hunting the Friday after Thanksgiving. Ended up being perfect pheasant hunting weather with a light snow and minimal wind. Between the 5 of us we got 13 roosters in half a days hunting before the snow turned to rain. Since I didn't make it back for opening weekend this year (wasn't missing opening weekend of rifle season here), it was nice to get out and see some good dog work and hunt with friends I don't get to see very often. Spent Monday and Tuesday before deer season doing some last minute scouting. Saw several nice mature bucks and lots of does, so things were looking good. Opening morning found my dad (not hunting, there for company), a friend and myself setup looking over an alfalfa field. The winds were a sustained 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Pretty well shut down the deer movement, but was neat hearing the wind roar thru the trees. Sat in stand until about 10am and went to go push out some small pockets of trees set back in large CRP fields. Lots of times the deer will get out in those fields and ride out the short rifle season. First pocket we stopped at we got a group of does out of and I decieded to put some meat in the freezer with a 50 yard broadside shot. Was a good decision as those were the last deer we saw for 2 days thanks to the heavy winds. We hunted very hard until Saturday afternoon not seeing much deer activity but tons of evidence that had been around. I think we struggled so hard thanks to all the rain they had this year. The grass fields were super thick, as were all the milo fields. The stubble was as tall as I can ever remember, lots of it being taller then waist height. All that cover to go along with standing water in every low spot had the deer really spread out. Finally on the last day of the hunt I caught a decent 10 point buck bedded down on the edge of a milo field. Got within about 60 yard before he presented a shot. Not the monster everyone goes to KS looking for, but I am very happy with him. My dad and I probably hunted as hard for this deer as any previous buck. All in all it was a great 10 days in KS. Got to go hunting with family and friends, plus a freezer full of meat. Now I just ready for next year to get after those big boys that are around.

Thanks guys. It was a good hunt, can't wait until next year.
The buck was in private land and the doe came off of a walk in hunting (private land leased by the state for public hunting) area that borders one of my cousins alfalfa fields.
