Depends on the version and options.

What are you planning to do with it?

Biggest difference in the Fords were 2" taller suspension and bigger brakes.

Depends on what you're going to be doing with it. For me it's a 1 ton just because I'm usually under a pretty good load... And a short bed is no more than a grocery getter as far as I'm concerned!

it will be for towing 5th wheel residence, will be cruising over the mountains probably once a season and back. will also be used as a truck as needed but the main reason is for the towing I am not brand loyal not big on the chevys have test drove the dodge and ford like the ride from both slightly more fond of the dodge at this point, don't need the 1 ton but wouldn't be against it if price is right

Better listen to the be super anal about maintenance and start setting $ aside for a oil cooler, egr delete and head studs.

I've had 2 and they were both great trucks and engines. Congrats!

We have a 6.0 at work and its the absolute biggest piece of crap I have ever been in. Been a lemon since day one. 3 head gaskets, 2 turbos. No power. Total junk. Its in the shop as we speak and only has 132000 on it. You couldn't give me another!

I've had 14 dodges since 1997 and ordered a 2012 F350 lariat crew in summer of 12. Hands down most enjoyable truck I have had (all diesels). I've had 2 2004 6.0's as trader trucks and egr deleted with proper maintenance they are great trucks. Ive got 3 dodges still and usually one or two of them are down for repairs. Cummins are still perfect but the dodge parts are giving me hell.

To the OP, do the maintenance and you'll be fine. If something does go wrong with the heads, make sure you take it to a place that knows what they are doing. Be prepared to spend a few bucks, but as long as they do it right, it'll last a long time.

And before people say it's a ford thing... nope. we get dodges for head work ALL the time, and even the chevy's have their own set of issues that we see a lot of.

Being an owner of a 6.0 and having issues with it, it's all in the technician and their knowledge. Not all Ford techs at dealers are good. I took it my first time to a place that said they do great work and about a year later, bam.. same thing. I was back home at this time so i took it to my buddy who is a AWESOME Ford tech and we started tear down. Found out the previous tech had done a LOT of "short cuts" that my buddy knew about and said a lot of them did it so they could have repeat work in the future. (yes it does happen). Since we fixed it the right way, I haven't had a single problem out of it. 165,000 miles strong and still rollin.

There are a few good reports on the ford 6.0 motor and many horror stories. The repair overall is in the thousands of dollars. Why take a chance with a 6.0? slinger

same can be said for cummins........ We work on ALL of them and they all have their problems and cost a lot to fix. had a guy with a 2010 dodge bill that was 7 grand..... and it only had 130,000 miles and this was the 2nd engine.... but he loved the truck and wanted to it fixed.

whatever diesel you get, dodge, ford, chevy, you need to keep the maintenance up and take care of it. Yes, there are ones that have problems even with that, but maintenance is key on all newer diesels.

I will "allow" for one head gasket job on a 6.0... But if done properly, AND THE TRUCK IS NOT ABUSED, you will get 250-300k miles without removing the heads again. So yes, I am saying that if you have had 2 or 3 head problems, and the truck is NOT abused, then you had an idiot for a mechanic. 6.0 Powerstrokes had their set of issues (as ALL diesel engines do, given enough time)... But you can spend a few grand and truly bulletproof one. The same can be said for most diesels. But if you race them, abuse them, don't maintain them; NONE of them will last long.
