I have an 8 yr old son that loves to go hunting. He has been bugging me about wanting a bow, but I told him he was too small for one right now. We've been watching a lot of hunting shows on TV recently and just last night saw a show with a kid smaller than him shooting a bow. Of course he asked if that kid can shoot one, why can't I? Can anyone recommend a bow for an 8 yr old? I don't want to put a lot of money in it as I know he will grow out of it in no time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We bought my son a Mathews Ignition a few months ago.. He's 8, about average strength and build.. (a little husky. LOL) The bow can grow with him, with the use of changeable cams.. And will kill about anything that walks out to 25 yards, with a well placed shot.. Check them out !!!

I appreciate the info. Glad to hear about that Matthews, I was hesitant to get him something for fear he would be discouraged he couldn't kill anything. I'll definitely take a look at the bows mentioned.
Thanks!

If it is just for target shooting, I would recommend a Matthews mini-Genesis. It is Excellent for beginner shooters. It is a bow that they will only outgrow when they need more poundage. At that point get him a matthews Genesis. The Genesis can be used for hunting. Both of these bows have an unlimited drawlength so it grows with the child. My 4 and 6 year old boys both shoot the mini-genesis. I started them at 4. I bought the younger boy one just a couple of months ago used on archerytalk.

Got my son a Browning Micro Mine when he was 8 two years ago. It is adjustable from 18" to 28" on the draw and 30-40 pounds. He has now got it bottomed out already and is shooting 40.5 lbs and his draw is 22".
This bow is damn accurate and he is shooting cosistent 5 shot groups at 20 yards under 4". It is shooting between 185 & 205 FPS and he has one pin for 15 yards, one for 25, and one for 35.
I believe the bow was about $275 and by the time we put a arrow rest, good sight, S-Coil, string silencers, and a release it was right at $400. I would estimate that he's probably shot over 10,000 arrows from it and it is still in great shape!
Good luck, hope you find what your looking for. I know that he's going to want to upgrade pretty soon but I'm not sure what to look for for him. I'm guessing a good 40-50 pound bow that has a wide draw adjustment as well. Any suggestions out there???
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Mathews make a cheaper line of bows Misson and this year they came out with a bow for kids that can be used for years ajustable poundage without replacing the limbs every 10 lbs and ajustabe drawleght. I wish I would have waited until now to buy my son a bow , this past summer I got him a parker Side kick ($319)and it is a piece of junk and parker has the sorriest customer service that I have ever seen.

The Parker Buckhunter is a hard one to beat for a growing boy. The poundage is very adjustable, and the draw length is adjustable by simply moving an allen screw. It does a really good job of growing with a kid.
I had a completely different experience with the Parker bunch than did Wild Boar, and I think most others would rate their customer service as high. My son's Parker bow served him very well from 12 to 16 until I sold it and bought him a Mathews Outback. It's now serving another growing boy and doing well.
They are faster than you'd think, and at 50 lbs. you'll believe a deer could easily be killed with it.

I'm pretty sure my boy has decided to sell his Micro Mini and upgrade to a new Diamond Razor Edge. He has his bow cranked all the way down (40 lbs) and pulling it back with ease. He's ready for a heavier draw now. If you are interested in his Micro Mini and are in the SA area, PM me for details.
