I am determined to try my hand at turkey hunting this spring. How far will a turkey come to a call?

"It is the same boiling water that softens the rice, which hardens the egg." It's not always about the circumstances, but what you are made of....

If they can hear you, they can potentially come. They may not come, but if they can't hear you, they won't know you're there. Other hens can be your best friend( if they're dominant and lead toms to you) or your worst enemy. Toms will rarely leave one hen for another(you). The further away, the more potential he'll find another hen on his way to you.

I've called in turkey's a half mile away that I know of, could be further in other cases depending on wind, topography, etc.

I called one in from over 700 yards once in Missouri. Across a pasture, across a tank damn, up a hill across another pasture then 200 yards down a wooded hill top. First long beard I ever killed. Inch and a quarter spurs. I'll never for get that and the shaking of the shotgun trying to shoot.

Saturday I was watching 2 gobblers at a feeder. Started using a call and they definitely paid attention to it, but shortly after they took off running in a different direction...away. I have heard you can call too much???? Sunday morning used the call sparingly and had 2 gobblers come in our direction to a feeder. Tried to get them closer but they would not come in....so we shot one at 75 yards with a 22-250.
Good times.

If a HOT tom can hear you, and not pre-occupied by hens, he'll come. Sometimes they get held up by fences, water, roads, or whatever, but a tom will respond to a good caller. Just DON'T overcall!

Very true. Sometimes silence is your best friend.
