Saturday morning got to the roost an set up, waited for the fly down and the gobblers started hammering. I gave em a little sweet love talk and one hung out with a hen and the other came strutting ready for action. The problem was my decoy was above him and he hung up at 55 yards. No matter what he would not budge and I guess with out seeing a hen he moved off. Had I known he would go the way he did I would've tried the 55 yard shot but I didn't, oh well.
Sunday morning same roost but set up closer and more in the open. I see the birds fly down but the stupid hens start dragging the big birds off. I did my best to piss her off and get her to come to the decoy but they all hung up at 80. Then I hear drumming to my left and look up and see two bigger jakes coming. They had 4" beards so not little birds but not big toms but hell I let jakes ride in my truck too so I changed my focus. These were fired up, gobbling at every sound like most jakes do and even at the thunder as it started raining and lightning. I glanced toward the gobbler but he was having none of this game as he had two hens with him so the poor jakes fate was sealed. At 25 yards the close bird made me moving and folded up to leave but I gave him some 3 1/2" #4 to the noggin and his buddy headed out but he was too slow I pulled up above and in front of him and he did a barrel roll at 50 yards. I ain't to proud to take out a couple jakes, sorry trophy hunters, I don't go to observe the wildlife I go to collect it. Two birds down and one sore shoulder and all this before 8:00 o'clock. Its gonna be a good day.

In those situations a nice .223 can make a nice turkey gun. If you can see it, you can kill it. Nice hunt. Congrats.

They will eat good. If you got the numbers I guess you could call it selective harvest and the gobblers that did not get killed will really have some nice beards next year if the trophy hunters don't get them first.

Thanks folks. I hunt Jack county and we got tons of birds and since its just me and who ever I take on 1200 acres I have no problem knocking down jakes.

Rio's are probably the easiest wild turkey to harvest, with Eastern's being the hardest. And it's considered blasphemy to include anything about rifles when discussing turkey hunting.

Congratulations! You've taken step 1 in completing a Grand Slam.

I grew up in a Graham, I was hunting Jack county last weekend but only about 12 miles from loving. Sunday birds were hammering at every thing, Saturday they came off the roost gobbling but by 9 o'clock you didn't hear much.
