Ok i have a place in south texas but but I had an itch to go so I called this ad that I had found in the Ftworth star telegram. 75$ a day hunt rnger mtn. not bad i have hunted that area before so anyway, me and 3 other guys go out for a three day hunt because relly you can't have just one day. we get out there in three days not a deer seen no hog not even a coon, place has been gutted. And to top it off sunday moring when we got up to hunt we notice has we are going threw the woods on the mule that theres a freaking camper that has come in sat. night and set up where we were hunting because becuase the guy had booked the ranch twice and did not tell anyone. all i am saying is becareful. this was a scam in my opinion.

I have seen that ad for many years and I figured it was a scam, as far as Im concerned any ad in the paper is not up to par.

Hmmm, too broad a brush for me, this sounds like a bad deal, but we have found great places in the paper, I think it has more to do with the person placing the ad than the actual media source. A lot of older landowners still use the paper because that's what they know and understand...

We went about 10-12 years ago as well!!! It was hunt for 'stray exotics'...LOL!! We saw a RABBIT and a deer carcass. That's it. Don't remember the guy's name but it was the same one that used to run the West End Ranch a few miles east of there. Some of my buddies payed for a hunt at THAT place and it was a JOKE!
Anyway, beware, it's hard to know up front what you're getting into! Admittedly this may be an entirely different deal than what me and the others got taken into.

I never put much hope or faith into Day Hunts, but a buddy and I booked a weekend at the Ranger Mountain lease 10 or so years ago. We acually saw some deer on the property. Of course it was after dark while heading back to the camp.
We did see a ton of ducks and coyotes there though, so if that's your thing, it might be worth a trip.

I hunted that place about 15 years ago and the guy that had it was Walt Chance.
I saw deer, turkey, and got a shot at some hogs.
The thing some of you folks need to think about, is that place has beeen doing that for 20 years, and evidently there is a steady enough income that they are still doing it.
Think about that for a minute or two.
As for the remark about stuff being advertised in news papers, I have done fairly well on the day hunts I have found in news papers over the years.
The keys are, don't be picky, and go early in the season.

Not everyone that has hunted out there has walked away empty handed.
As I stated, with any Day Lease operation, it all depends on the hunters expectations.
Around the state, the operations that have better success rates, charge more.
Folks that just want to shoot a deer and are not worried about antlers, can find some really good places, and there have been some THF members that have offered some Day Hunt opportunities at really great prices.
I have noticed that some of the folks that complain about places like Ranger Mountain, are looking for a cheap place to hunt, with expectations of killing lots of game, that very rarely works out. JMO.

Crazyhorse, the problem is when somebody says that they are running feeders and have blinds, you would think this is true. When I went 10 years ago, there where no feeders that where running and all the blinds where trashed. Shot up, destroyed, etc....I agree with you, $75 for a hunt, you probably should not have high expectations but he should still be honest. I'm sure he doesn't have returning customers.

I have only been on a day hunt once in my life, but that hunt was a good one with my father in Bracketville about ten years ago. We both killed nice fat eight points within about 15 minutes of each other, so guess they are hit or miss.
Thanks and Prayers to Soldiers, present and past, for fighting to preserve the freedom we enjoy as Americans!

I take it you are not familiar with the old P.T.Barnum saying, "There's a sucker born every minute". Not everyone in this world cares about repeat customers. It remains a fact, this place has been doing this for about 20 years as best I can tell, and evidently they are making enough to at least keep the ad in the paper. I have heard or read this same story and it was that way the time I went, and I can't remember exactly how long back that was, but it was over 10 years ago, maybe closer to 14 or 15 years back. I am not saying that a person should not be honest, BUT, if a person hunts very much at all, and sees this ad, they should know right then that this place can not be what it is trying to pass its self off as. One thing I was trying to point out however, is that the statement one person made: Quote:
as far as Im concerned any ad in the paper is not up to par.
Is flat out .
I have been on several day hunts that turned out really good, because for 1, I know fairly well what to expect and that is not B&C class bucks, and 2, if it is a day lease operation, they are just trying to make a little $$$$ on the side.
If the place was that good and they were running feeders and had blinds available, it would either cost a whole heck of a lot more, or it would be season leased, not day hunted.
Also, from my experience as I stated earlier, if a person is contemplating doing a day hunt for white tails, they need to look at getting it done before Thanksgiving.

You want a good day hunt holler at bayourat on here. He usually has something going on. I took some guys out there last year and had a blast. Although I was the only one to get anything, it wasn't from lack of chances.
Hunting is more to me than Antlers on the wall. It's more about the memories you make, and sharing those memories with friends, and family.

Crazyhorse, Walt had a different place it was Thurber Ranch exactly where you describe it. He was different than most day leasers are. He didn't over hunt the place and wanted to see the hunters succeed. I never hunted deer with him but I personally know people who did. They all had good hunts. I did hunt dove with him on several occasions on some other places north of Strawn and he knew how to take care of business. Fields were always full of sunflowers that had strips mowed and covered with birds. I did get to fish a few times, and called coyotes with his dad on Thurber Ranch when Walt had it leased. Walt does not do any of those day lease operations anymore and hasn't in several years. He is a friend and a nieghbor of mine and I don't think it is fair to throw his name in on this thread because he did not run the type of operation this thread was started about.

Thanks for that info, I really thought it was the same place.
I wasn'y meaning anything bad by mentioning his name, because I had a good hunt, even though I did not kill anything, but I did have the opportunity.
My post was not meant as an insult, sorry you took it that way.

No prob crazyhorse. I didn't really take it as an insult, like I mentioned he is a friend of mine I hate to see his name get throwed in to what has become a business that takes advantage of people wanting to go have a good time and successful hunt. That Thurber Ranch is now high fenced and has some beutiful animals running around it. It has a different name now. If they would take day hunters at a couple hundred dollars a day I would be there myself. But for now I will just enjoy my small lease and be thankfull for every moment I get to spend out there.
