So I just found out my mothers best friend of 10 years has family land in northeast AR. bang
I don't know much about the property and I am going to talk with her this weekend. Regardless though, I know what Arkansas duck hunting is like and I know some of yall have been out there. She said the land is near Pocahontas (proximity I dont know yet) which is on the black river.

Anyone know anything about that area?

Regardless I'll hunt something there. Hopefully ducks as well. Oh and funny thing is my great x3 grandfather is buried 13 miles from there I found out this year. Gonna take the family to go see the ancestors and hopefully kill some ducks for granddads old time sake. smile

I did a spring goose hunt not too far from Pocahontas in Walnut Ridge. It was mid Feb. and the place was still loaded with ducks. The property that we hunted also had a few tracts of flooded timber and it was quite a sight watching the mallards pile in there all day long. The Black River can provide some of Arkansas finest green timber hunting when everything gets right. If you have access to private land, it should be unbelievable. If nothing else, go stay up there and hunt the WMA. Some portions of it do not have the 25 hp restriction, which makes it a little more user friendly. But, that is not always a good thing.

Regardless, I think that is one of the best areas in Arkansas. You should be able to kill a green head or two around there.

Awesome hunt91. That's what I was hoping to hear. I can't wait to find out where the property is actually located. banana

That's a good area. Best part is, the ducks have to come through you before they get to Stuttgart. I know the conservation goose is quite good in that area as well.

Its a great area, scratch that, its the best area in Arkansas. How certain are you that you mothers best friends 'family land' isn't hunted by 'the family' and family friends. Chances are, if its good hunting land then its being hunted and your far down on the totem pole. Good luck, take pictures, post here.

To be honest I don't. But my mother mentioned it to her and I have a feeling she would know. her brother lives in the house there and the land I think was divided amoung them or they all co own it but her husband I think pays the taxes to keep the proeprty instead of selling it.

Now I have a ton of questions but if there were any allowed hunters or leasing of the property she would know (from what my mother told me there were not). Thats not to say that there may be trespassers too, or it could have 0% water.....??? Either way i will find out more info tomorrow when I get an address and my fingers are crossed. lol.

Well i couldnt wait lol. So I got the address. Unfortunately its not on a river but does have about an acre pond. Its 30 acres some of it wooded. I'm going to ask about other hunters but I doubt it. I may have found a good piece of water in a great flight path! smile

Just goes to show you never know who knows who that could be a great opportunity.

Oh and I think she said she has relatives that live in black rock which IS off a river. maybe i can get the land hook up with her relatives as well!

Hunting a pond in a waterfowl rich black river area would be like throwing 5 dollar bills around at a millionaire convention. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But it would be a wash.

I have a feeling he is right. Too much other top notch habitat that the birds have to use. But, by all means I hope you prove us wrong! Like I said in my first post, if nothing else you have a free place to stay while you hunt the WMA.

My stepmom's family is from North East Arkansas and I've never hunted up there.
Her daughter and son live in Nebraska and I've never hunted there.
Her son-in-law is from Wisconsin and I've never hunted there.
Maybe I should get the hook up.

My family owns a bunch of land in NE Arkansas (more near Cave City) and there aren't too many ducks our way. We are near the White River, but still too far in the mountains. We see geese flying over migrating, but rarely see ducks on any of our ponds. You might be in a better area though. It's all deer hunting for me on our land.
