how do you determine what a real marlin is? has no safety. jm on the barrel. everything is straight instead of crooked. stock and forearm are actually fitted correctly. rifling inside of barrel is smooth and spiral instead of chattery. all machining on receiver is smooth and nice instead of looking like a beginner machinist on crack did it.

the newer ones are supposed to have been straightened out and built correctly like someone who builds guns for a living actually built a gun like they were supposed to. i think a few disgruntled remington employees may have got a swift kick and told to shape up.

Try and find an older one in good shape, My favorite truck gun is a Marlin 1894 SSLimited in 357Mag 16 inch barrel sure is handy and has worked well out to 135 yards on hogs, deer, yotes, raccoons, armadillos, skunks, snakes.... you get the picture.

Savage bolt action model 340 in 30-30 is a good cheap truck gun as well. They can be found for less than $300.
I feel more like I do now then I did when I got here.

That was a mistake on my part.
Towards the end of production, Savage intended to make long action 99s ( 30-06 and 270) But I dont think they made many. They made one in .30-06. Two I think - both prototypes, but I could be wrong! The previously mentioned model 99 savage is my favorite gun of all time, but it's going to be cost prohibitive to use as a beater truck/brush gun. Most I see are $700+. (But you couldn't buy mine from me for $10000) Mine is a 99 CD in .308 bought new about 35 years ago, and as stated you couldn't buy it for $10,000. (...maybe $10,001) IMHO - Cost prohibitive for a truck gun (unless your rollin' in $$$$) Mine is a 99f in 250-3000. I believe it I late 50s early 60s. But I havnt done the research to know for sure. It was great grandpas, then my dads, now mine. Finally retired a few month ago. Ammo is scare, and I just did a refinish on it, and it's beautiful. (Since I'll never sell, I don't care it reduced the value) so it was a good time to retire it. Tang safety or lever safety? Round counter? Serial number greater than 1 million or less?

Remington Model 14. Pump, .30 caliber. very similar ballistics to a .30.30. I doubt very many of you are familiar with this rifle as it is my understanding the Model 94 was a resounding success to the detriment of the Model 14.

I would still try and find an old one but if you can't and if you believe Remington as shaped up, I don't see how you could go wrong. (All of this is assuming that Remington has indeed replaced the monkeys they had assembling Marlins with actual people)

Just picked up a Ruger Mini 14 in stainless/synthetic. It will be my truck this weekend while I'm driving around the lease.

M1 .30 Carbine for a truck gun.
Other than being kinda $$$$, it would make and excellent truck gun. And loaded with proper bullets, effective at 100-125 yds.
