Only 2 weeks ago I had near topped off my 55 gallon drum, so when I opened it up this morning I didn't expect to see too much corn gone (run it twice a day for 10 seconds)...imagine my surprise when I opened it up and could see the darn funnel at the bottom....

I suspected the source and my camera has confirmed it...little bastages. Guess I'm puttign up a varmint guard next weekend. Little turds better not go through the 3 bags I happened to have on the truck this morning....*^&(&%*%&*%*%^^* coons....

I think the darn hogs put them up to it..

Earl

Get some coon traps and set them...then feed them a delicate desert of .22 rounds. One serving each should do nicely.

Not looking like the critter cage is doing much good in that last pic. I built a cage out of range wire. The only thing is, the coons squeezed right through it and would lay up inside the wire and eat all night. I had a cam shot with 7 in the cage. grrrrr...I don't like coons.

You know what works better than a cage is get some PVC pipe about 4 feet long and bigger round then the legs of the feeder. Slip them over the legs and get a bolt and screw it into the side of each leg about 6 in to a foot off the ground. When the coons try to climb it it rolls and they slip off. They can't grip it like they can the metal.

Them coons are mechanical geniuses. No mere "guard"
will keep them out. Either kill'em or feed'em.

note: no actual coons were emotionally abused or
otherwise tormented during the typing of this post.

Goood Gosh and that is even with a guard....has you found a solution for them?

I didn't mind it before, they weren't hurting me too bad...but 50 gallons in 2 weeks is unfriggin allowable!

Yeah I know of that approach with tripod feeders...but I think my ladder says "this way to the promised land" to the coons.

Anyone get something like that to work on a ladder platform?

You know, normally I don't think I'd like to do something like that...but that was before watching 50 gallons of corn go down the drain so quick...I do think I'll try that. If I put it up on the platform then I know nothing will get to it other than them. I've got a squirrel or two there as well that I don't really want to bother but I've never seen him do anything other than pick it up off the ground. Thanks for the idea.

Never had this problem till this year. Fortunately it didn't get bad until about three weeks ago. Their emptying my 300 lbs of feed in about 7 days.$$$$$$$ After I shot my buck I didn't refill it. I was going to buy a new feeder anyway. Will probably try some of the ideas above.

I've trapped 52 of 'em on my ranch this year; they don't bother me much now. As an added bonus we had the best Turkey hatch we've had in years!

What is the most effective way to trap coons? I'm building 5 live traps in my shop just for this purpose. I see Reverendbiker trapped 52 this year. Any tips? What bait, etc?

First I bought a live trap from Harbor Freight. BIG mistake. Large coons just forced their way out. I bought a couple of live traps from Ironcitytrapcompany on eBay:
Live Trap
Worked like a champ. I also have a couple of Lil' Grizz cuff traps that work well. Best baits I've found are sardines, tuna, or mini marshmallows.

I had coons infest one of my feeders for the first time this year. I ran a piece of wire about 175 feet over to the hot wire for the bull pasture. I've got a hot wire running around the feeder motor and the rest of the wire is still shielded running to the feeder so as not to zap a deer or me. I got to see a coon hit that bull wire and he did'nt go back for a second try. I made sure of that anyway with a shot out of my trusty .30-06

Hey deerstrangler, I know I already asked about your pic but I can't remember what post that was. Did you shoot him this year?
