Looking for a place to take my son other than LBJ grasslands. We live in the DFW area and willing to travel out for the right place that has birds. Can't afford a lease or paid hunt but, want to get him on a tom. Thanks

Head east to hunt the easterns. Lots of public land in east tx but hunting turkeys there will be "spotty". You need to make a scouting trip or two.

If it's public, there are no "best kept secrets" out there anymore. Might as well help others out and mention where the hunting is decent.

You might be better off going out of state. Check out Ok and Ks.

Maybe so but the plave I go is at least a 2 mile walk in, maybe 2 1/2 . I have seen a couple "hunters" within 1/2 mile from the truck though. I guess there lazy or scared to walk in the dark. But I have yet to have company on opening day where I go to kill a turkey.

Wow, Whitney looks really nice. They even have a very detailed game harvest statistics section on the website.

I've also seen and heard turkeys around Whitney, so I'd say it's worth researching. Oops, was I supposed to only say that in the super-secret PM? Now jtprocaddie is gonna be mad at me

If you don't find anything there are some good places on LBJ you just have to do a lot of walking and scouting.

If you don't find anything there are some good places on LBJ you just have to do a lot of walking and scouting. First started hunting near whitney over 15 years ago. First time had a gobbler come in I shot right over his head and he was outa there. Several years later I started hunting LBJ and finally killed a public land gobbler...nice mature one too. They are there but you have to put in the time and work. Most birds roost and frequent on the private land bordering the public. Was talking to Jason Harden who is the turkey biologist for tpwd a couple of weeks ago and he said recent studies showed the majority of birds actually avoid stepping foot on most of the public areas of the grasslands. The trapped and released birds with tracking transmitters actually showed a pattern of the birds walking fence lines and avoiding setting foot on the public side. Those that did never stayed on the public side over an hour and usually in the mid part of the day when most hunters are taking a lunch break. That being said I do have buddies that hunt the grasslands and take birds every year...but they are out there putting in the legwork and finding the spots that aren't pressured as hard and the birds aren't too weary of traffic from hunters...

There are hot spots that will not stay hot spots if they get flooded with people. Boy, that sounds like it sure would be an interesting thread that way. Then the whole conversation would look like this: PM Sent PM Sent PM Sent PM Sent Exactly! I may not post the exact location of a honey hole but I don't have a problem telling someone where they can go hunt. Some people are so paranoid and think just because you mention a particular place the floodgates will open and there will be a hunter behind every tree. With the way hunter numbers are declining and all those fighting to take that privilege away I'm all for giving a few pointers. If they are willing to put in the time and legwork to go and find the birds and actually make a kill they deserve it because they worked for it. To this day I have people that I've helped locate birds when they first started turkey hunting years back who I can call on and they can point me to where the birds are because they live closer than me and have spent more time out there scouting over the years since I moved to Houston. Therefore I'm not too concerned about those crying about people posting public places to hunt....that's why it's called public land...ANYONE can get on the net and look this stuff up..Quit Trippen!

Thanks everyone, Tjack28 I think it was you that was gonna take my son and I out to LBJ last year for youth weekend. To the other that don't wanna share. That's sad cause our kids are the next generation of hunters. If they never get the chance to harvest a turkey or just get to see one on a set. how will they ever know if they wanna be a part of turkey hunting? Thanks again guys.

Yea..I was trying to hook you up with a buddy of mine who lives not far from there. He's one of the people I shared a particular area with where he and his son were successful in their turkey hunt one youth weekend years back. He started organizing a youth hunt there for youth weekend a couple of years ago...not sure if he's doing it this year since he recently had neck surgery...
