So I have read Chapter 46 of the Texas Penal Code, and I think I understand it ....The question has likely been asked before so I am seeking some clarity. My daughter is 18 and attends college. She needs a handgun to keep with her at home for protection when I am away. I read that I am leagal to give her one at 18, but it is unlawful for her to purchase from an FFL. Would a person be in violation since effectively the transfer from an FFL is illegal until 21, and filling out the forms for an FFL transfer asks if the purchaser is going to be the owner yet it is likely at some point it will be gifted to the 18 year old?
Opinions?

You purchase it as yours. If you happen to leave your firearm at her home and she has to use it for protection nothing would ever be said about it whether she is 18 or 50. She would never have to claim ownership of it. I am assuming she is going to school in Texas?

An 18 year old can legally buy a handgun from an individual.
An individual can legally sell a handgun to an 18 year old.
You most certainly can buy a handgun as a gift for your daughter.
"Are you the actual transferee/buyer of the firearm(s) listed on this form?"
Answer yes, as you ARE the actual buyer. You are not purchasing it "on behalf" of her, either. You are the buyer, and it is legal for you to buy a handgun as a gift for her.
I would suggest not mentioning this to the clerk, as they will often go the "better safe than sorry" route, even if they are completely ignorant of the law.

Yes, you can give her one. Yes she can keep it in her home. Yes she can keep it in her vehicle (as long as it is concealed). No, she cannot carry it around on her person...unfortunately.

One more thing. You'll have to by her ammo too since she has to be 21 to buy handgun ammo.

Yes she can keep it in her vehicle. You have no idea how many 18 year old turds I have pulled over, that I have taken to jail before, that have a hand gun in the car and I can't do anything about it except run it to see if it's stolen. Kinda aggravating!! But for a kid not making trouble such as your daughter, go for it but explain to her what she can and can't do with it.

Regardless of wether they are being a turd, why do you want to "do something" to somebody who legal owns a gun, and is carrying it legally?
