I would like some advice from the trappers on here. I have a skunk living under an office at work that I am going to trap. I have a havahart trap I use for coons, but don't want to use it for skunks because I don't want to get sprayed. I know I can put a towel/blanket/tarp over it to make it safer for me from getting sprayed, but would rather snare it and be done with it.
So, if I set a kill snare (yes I know how- just never used for skunks)- will the skunk spray after it has been snared? That is the only issue I am concerned with at this point. From your experience, do they relax and spray? Do I need to worry about handling it the next morning if it didn't spray?
Thanks.

My dad does this in Austin.
With skunks, catch them in the Havahart, then cover them with a blanket. They will not spray if it does not see you.
If you snare one and it dies, it will relax and release the spray.

Throw some moth-balls under the building. The skunk will find a new habitat.

Throw some moth-balls under the building. The skunk will find a new habitat. False. Ive done that before and it does not work. Just old wifes tale. You can dispatch them without them spraying. You make a syringe pole from 1/2 pvc pipe. Get a syring from tractor supply and fill it with acetone. Slowly inject the skunk in the chest and it will curl up before you even finish and no spray.

Omg will it spray. That thing will empty everything it's got before he gets choked out. Your loop has to be like 3 in to get a neck shot. Otherwise you'll hip catch him and have a real mess. Your Gonna get sprayed any way you try. Cage trap with a syringe and hope it sleeping when you go to stick him. I would cage trap and .22 to the head. Still gonna leak somethin though. Acetone is fastest way but you have to make a good pole like jdw said

Get a syring from tractor supply and fill it with acetone. Slowly inject the skunk in the chest and it will curl up before you even finish and no spray. This is how you do it. Use the live trap. More than likely it wont spray and you wont even need the blanket. Bring one in case, but you shouldnt need it. Just move slowly and calm. Talk in a calm voice like someone else said. Typically they will give you a warning if they are going to spray. They will start pawing at the ground. Use a 4 ft pole, with a syringe on the end.

Moth balls do work. I had 4 or 5 of them under a house a few years ago. They were mating under there and when they mate the male sprays. It was nasty. I put 4 boxes of moth balls under there and the next day they were gone.

I remember a conversation with my Dad. He had trapped a skunk a few weeks prior to our chat, and I asked him how he got the skunk out of the trap. He said that he used that 'blanket' approach to cover the trap so he could pick it up and move the trap away from the house. I asked how well using the blanket had worked and he said: "Worked pretty darn good. I only got sprayed a little bit". I looked over a Mom and she just rolled her eyes. I knew what she meant, in that a little bit of skunk spray goes a long ways.

Left a live trap sat once trying to catch barn cats. Skunk got in it and I thought I was messed. Moved real slow and got up to the cage and .410 to head took care of him. He didnt leak at all, might have just got lucky

220 Conibear trap. Breaks the back or neck and they don't spray. Caught many that way as a youth trapper.

Put paper sacks around the live trap and set it. When u catch them u can pick them up and haul the off. Now getting them out of the trap afterward is a little harder. I have seen this done at Alcon Headquarters in Fort Worth and the Critter guy would actually put them in the back of his van and haul them off.

After they are in the trap you just need a pond or creek. Toss it in and come back in 5 minutes.
