Pictures of my great grandfather (arrow) in a hunting party. He was a contract hunter in Aspen, CO just after returning from the Civil War.

He was a meat hunter for the Little Annie mine workers. He was part owner of the mine and was killed in a mine cave in. He is buried on the side of a mountain near the mine. The mine is still producing gold and silver today.

As I understand it he hunted for the mining district cooperative. The mine owners, which he was one, received their portion of provisions from the cooperative.

Very cool pics. What did he hunt as a contract hunter? They hunted anything that would provide meat for large numbers of men. As can be seen in the picture elk and deer were primary. You can barely see them on the right but there are bear hides laying on the rocks to dry so I assume bear was on the menu as well. What is really interesting are the rifles they are using. I have zoomed in on the original photograph and have picked out several muzzleloaders and lever action rifles. On the far right is a Sharps carbine. On the far left is a double barrel shotgun.

Neat picture and great story. There was only about a 5-7 year period after civil war that game (primary buffalo) was abundant. Then the herds were shot out by Government hunter to ruin the Indian source of living. Buufalo Hides and bones went to the North East by rail for leather and fertilizer. Meat was left to spoil mostly. And the hunters went there way also.
? are the pictures on a tin plate. They are old?
Cool find

Cool find They are tintype photos on a cardboard backing. They were taken in 1867. There were no buffalo in that part of Colorado. The main source of meat was salt beef, deer, elk, bear and antelope.
