Question on hog panels.
Are they high enough to keep cattle out?
I believe they are 34" high.
If so, how far have you guys put t posts with success?

Yes they are high enough to keep cattle out. We put our t-post about every 7'. Believe it or not we have had issues with a very large boar climbing into the feeder pen.

Never underestimate the destructive power of a wild hog. Never, ever forget that little piece of advice.

The big ones will climb up and get their front legs over the fence then rollover... seen it happen a few times... this one must have got hung on the way over and had his way with the panel

I've had cows get over hog panels. I ran barbed wire (one strand) about 10-12" above the top of the panels & that kept them out.

They will keep MOST cattle out but it doesn't take but one jumper to misjudge and land on top of the panel. Next thing you know, you have a 16 foot path to the "candy of the day" for the rest of the herd.

A row of barbed wire 10" above the panels kept them out.

They were in there every day for a few weeks - before, during & after snow. There's plenty of grass & pasture is far from over-stocked.

or a determined cow...I like my t posts every 4 feet keeps them from bulldozing it over. cost is minimal compared to a destroyed feeder

I read an interesting article by an A&M biologist on feeder pens. He suggested cutting a section of the top row off of every other panel. This allows young fawns to jump into the pens with the does. His pens were all hog panels and made 64' x 64'. I've never made my that large, 48' x 48' seems to work fine. I personally have never had a hog breach one of my pens. Maybe I just wasn't in an area where the hogs were large enough.

Hog panels are 34" tall. They won't stop cows at all if they realize what is on the other side. The key is to make the circumference of the pen large enough that the corn, when broadcast, doesn't land close enough to the edge of the pen that the cows are able stick their neck over and reach it. Once they can do that, it is just a matter of them leaning/pushing until the panel eventually yields.

Alternatively, cattle panels are 50" and no cow can get their neck over those. This height is not a problem for deer to go over.

I have 16 cattle panels. 50" high, not that much more than hog panels. I cut a couple of spots down a couple squares and strategically placed them to funnel deer to jump in where it was a better shot for me. That said they went in and out anywhere they wanted to. I prefer no pen tbh. A winch up feeder throws a wide spread and doesn't get bothered by them.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

a row of barb wire..plus put every other t-post at a angle so they cant push against it..we have even put all of the post like that..works good and we have alot of BIG pigs..and stubborn cows..use good wire.
