Without being a true nomad but getting out regionally....what duck species are hard to come by in the central? I am getting into duck hunting more this year and would hate to fry up one that needs hanging up.

Other than hybrids and sea ducks (scoters), Cinnamon teal and black duck come to mind.

Like you said. Different parts of the country consider different bird trash or gold just depends on who you are talking to but like beretta said whichever ones makes the memory last.

Eurasian Widgeon landed just outside of range one day about 7 years ago on our East Texas lake, that would have been on the wall in an instant if only he would of cooperated... We also shot a Goldeneye hen on that same lake, if it had been a drake we probably would have mounted it due to the rarity in our neck of the woods.

Cinnamon
Black duck
Mottled duck
Greater scaup-often overlooked. I've been trying for years to get a true mount quality greater. Shoot a couple every yr in tx out of the layout but not mount worthy.

Full plumed blue wing
Full plumed shoveler- truly one of the prettiest birds in hand.

Black ducks in the central flyway are very few and far between. Few in the ms flyway but not many.

I have a gorgeous pintail at the taxi right now.

I think that ringnecks (I know, I know) make pretty mounts too.

I'll mount a mallard, golden eye, buffelhead or a Eurasian widgeon or a regular widgeon. we had 3 Eurasians land at our lake the other day that were gorgeous. same goes for a redhead and a canvasback. Wood Duck is also top of the list

I shot a full plummed BWT in December but I don't find that bird all that attractive. I'll mount a cinnamon in a heartbeat.

blackducks, gadwell, etc. just don't do it for me

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I've got a hooded merganser at the taxi right now. We never see wood ducks where I hunt and they are arguably the prettiest so that would be next for me.

I don't see how you could pass up getting your first fully plumed wood duck done.
