Anybody else hunt jack county? We've just about 100 acres of family land just inside jack county on the border with wise. This will be my first year hunting jack. Grew up hunting near Victoria, and havnt hunted much the last few years. This is the wife's grandmas property that I basically have free reign to do with as I wish. I'll be the only hunter.

What the deer population like around there? Can I reasonably expect some success if I start feeding corn early?
This place has been hunted in the past, but not in a few years.

Caribou, I pass by that area all season on my way to SW Young county. Have seen some toads new Runaway Bay off 114. Have also seen some nice ones between Wizard Wells and Jacksboro 114 turnoff onto Jacksboro highway. Guess if you have water and good cover and decent responsible neighbors, you'll have some pretty good deer.

That's good to hear. We do have some water (very small pond) but it's covered up in pig and deer tracks. It's just been so dry, it's hard to tell how fresh the tracks are.

DQ hit the nail on the head. Wizard wells area is where I used to hunt. Cherryhomes ranch is close and they don't allow hunting. Some toads in that area. Lots of hogs and turkey too.

Wizard Wells is about 8-10 miles west of Runaway Bay right off 114.

There's some decent deer out there. I've got a small place out close to the wise/jack county line.

I grew up in wise and my wifes family is from around Victoria. My experience has been bigger deer in the Jack county than Victoria for sure. We have a cattle lease in Jack and there are some great deer in that country

That gets me pretty pumped up for deer season. Thanks for all the replies. Time to start compiling materials to build a couple blinds.

Just shy of 100. Not huge, but it's got fields that are surrounded by brush, and brush that is very hunt able.

That has to be pretty close to my house. Should be good population and they will be feeder hounds to boot.

Sid Richardson scout ranch area had a bunch of deer when I hunted Wizard wells. We used to make a beer run to Runaway bay, and head back through the backroads. Saw lots of deer and turkey. It doesn't surprise me at all that you're starting to see exotics. Great area.

We have some property on the Jack/Wise line on what used to be lake Bridgeport next to the tarrant co. water board land. Some nice deer, be careful of the rattlers out that way.

Tff, just saw this thread. How funny. I too grew up in and hunted around Victoria. For the last 7 years I've hunted about 100 acres in Young County, and the last 4 years 240 acres in Jack. The Jack County lease is south of Bryson off of 1191. The area was burned out a few years ago but is good deer habitat now and there are some really good deer there.

Deer are more nocturnal generally speaking in Jack County then in Young (more hunting pressure would be my guess). I do have more deer on the smaller place in Young County (it's along Hwy 16 north of Loving) but better bucks in Jack. Both consistently have nice bucks, just the biggest ones are in Jack. The bucks in Jack also don't pattern as much as the ones on my place in Young. You have to hunt alot to see them. They won't allways appear at the same times like they do in Young.

I've never seen a rattle snake on either of these leases. I have alot more hogs on the place in Young. I suspect someone traps them near where I hunt in Jack as they should be there in greater numbers unless they just haven't come back since the fire. We've seen more hogs the last year or two than previously so that could be the case. I see more turkey in Jack than I do my place in Young - especially during deer season (they magically tend to dissapear in Young when opening day comes around).

I start feeding both places around the 1st of September. Harvesting a buck has never been a problem at either location. Average shooter legal buck at both places will be an 8 pointer with 14.5-15 inch spread but they get bigger if you and the neighbors let them. My best so far is a 130 class 10 point with an 18" inside spread from Young but I do have bigger ones than that on the place in Jack (150 class) just haven't hunted it hard enough to be there when they are.

The deer in this portion of the state are much bigger than the average deer around Victoria. At least from when I grew up and hunted around there. The last season I hunted the Victoria area was 14 years ago.

Earl

If you will let them mature in jack county they can be legitimate trophies. Just let them walk until they are 5.5yo+ and you will see big deer. My place I have hunted for 5 years. Didn't shoot any bucks the first 2 years. Shot a 156" 7yo the third year, a 180 2/8ths the 4th year and this year I watched 2 4.5 year olds in the 150's and a 5.5 year old that would scare 160". Had a 5.5 year old 14 point last year that was in the 170's that I think the neighbors shot and a 160" 13 point that I think died of the same fate. The deer have the potential to get big, but they have to get age on them. If more people would let the young deer walk you would see more B&C bucks come out of the county.

I'm sorry but you people are all telling stories. There are no deer in Jack Co. The hunting is terrible so don't waste your time....
Enjoy your property:-)

That is awesome and you have some great deer. However what you describe is not typical Jack County.

I've been all over thousands upon thousands of acres in Jack County. Been hunting there for over 20 years now, just about every big ranch you can think of. On every one of these properties, if the deer were allowed to age, they got big. Some of the ranches I have been on have not allowed hunting in 30+ years. There are absolute giants! The genetics are there, just needs a little time to see the end result. Also until AR's the average age of a buck that was killed in Jack County was 1.5. Kinda hard to make a trophy out of a 1.5 yo buck.
