I usually hit the Purple Pig when I'm in the Tyler/Poynor area visiting my boys. On spring break we made the trip down and it was horrible. Service was appalling, food was poor. Tasted like the ribs were boiled, stuck in the fridge for a week and then microwaved. Anybody else think it's slid or did I just hit it on a bad day. I'm definitely looking for a new BBQ joint next time.

We live quite close to the Purple Pig and eat there often, mainly cuz the wife loves their catfish plate and fried okra. I usually eat the same, or I order a burger or CFS, which is basic-fare decent. BBQ has little to recommend.

If you want great Q in Tyler, there is only one place to go: Stanley's on Beckham. Some also speak highly of Ribmasters in Whitehouse, but I can't say, having never eaten there. As long as Stanley's is cooking, there's no need to look elsewhere.

Actually stay in Poyner...cuz that's where the granddaughter is. Youngest son lives in Tyler. I agree, Stanley's is the real deal.

In Poynor? The 7-B café in Frankston is pretty good. Their Friday evening fried fish and shrimp buffet is darn good and reasonable. Desserts are good too. Unfortunately, most everything is fried, and I'm trying to cut back on fried foods these days.

The main cook at 7-B, Angie, who lived in Poynor/Rock Hill, was killed last month in an auto accident, so I can't say how the fare is holding up nowadays. I should go check it out....

I saw there is a Purple Pig BBQ opened in Kingsland on 1431. Havn't stopped and tried them though.

I agree that the purple pig started sliding about two years ago. Stanley's ribs are not my favorite since the Jr. League/BScene crowd started to frequent it. I used to meet my dad there for lunch when he worked at Mothers before they made the rub fancy. Still like the brisket and sausage tho.

Purple pig is always hit and miss. Last few times I've been it has been pretty bad.
