Anyone else concerned with making the whole month of October as youth hunting. 1: Will it reduce bow hunting recruitement among the youth hunters 2: Make the deer more nocturnal earlier in the season due to increased pressure 3: Decrease hunting opporturnites for adult hunters
I do not think it needs to be a month long. Any father worth his salt will give his son/daughter first chance during the youth weekend and every chance during regular season without cutting into bow hunting. When my son needed supervising he was the shooter until he got his deer.

Instead of a month, IMO it should be set at only a week at most. While I am all in favor of gaining more young hunters, and getting them in the field, my concern is that there can and will be more "wounded" deer as a result. I'm basing that on my observations at our store and from personal experiences in the field. At our store, I'm seeing many fathers who are "pushing" their kids into hunting at a much too early age! Secondly, seeing deer wounded by a young, inexperienced hunters, often will discourage the young hunter into not wanting to go hunting .... at all!
Let the proposal include a week long period, running from Saturday to Saturday; that would give the kids two weekends plus an entire week to hunt!

What is wrong with the present system of the weekend in October and the weekend in January?
Is this something TP&W has proposed, or just wishful or paranoid thinking?????

THEY WILL BE IN SCHOOL EXCEPT THE WEEKENDS SO IT REALLY ONLY ADDS 3 WEEKENDS. YES IT IS A TPW PROPOSAL. WHY NOT 3 MORE WEEKENDS IN JANUARY INSTEAD OF OCT.?

I really don't have a problem with it, a well trained and supervised youngster is no more likely to wound a deer than anyone else in my opinion and probably less likely to do so then some of the hooched up adult hunters that hit the woods on a daily basis. I've killed my share of deer over the years and it's much more important to me to see that the youngsters are successful now days. With school and youth sports most youngsters won't get to spend all that much more time in the woods anyway.

Yep with school and sports, it's hard to get a weekend just to hunt now days. Wouldnt be much hunting in the week due to school.
January is okay but what about all the bred does that may be killed. Or would it be buck only.
It ain't easy being me.

I'd be all for one extra week or weekend, and maybe a weekend the opening weekend of archery even sounds fair to me. Not a month, though, too many testosterone-driven hunters could have their kids tagged out before youth weekend would even begin.

I went back and looked at the proposals, and there it was.
In fact after going back and looking at it, I believe I agreed to the proposal.
Just because it is open, does not mean anyone has to go.

I wouldn't care what they did as far as youth hunters went. We start rifle season the first weekend of bowseason and it doesn't seem to mess with deer movement. But I started bowhunting at the age of 12 and would really hate for a youngun to miss out on that.... you learn a lot at that age by just sitting and watching deer so I would hate to see kids just pass up bow hunting.

I don't like the idea one bit, I'm also for gaining more youth hunters but opening deer hunting up year round for youth ain't gonna increase participation due to how expensive deer hunting has become. I could go on all day why the taking the whole month of october is a bad idea but if they want to add to the youth season I wish they would do it in january(however the pregnant does would be an issue), anyone opposed please sign this petition http://www.petitiononline.com/bow2008/petition.html

Slightly off topic, but why can't there be at least a weekend for yputh archery.
Dozer, mulched, and trackhoe work. Fencelines, senderos, tanks. Let me know if I can help with any dirtwork or construction.

On our place every month is youth season. As far as I am concerned, young hunters take a priority for many reasons. I do not impose restrictions on them and discount their hunts. Someone told me our place looks like a bunch of kids shooting young bucks. That suits me fine, GOD willing they will bring their kids to do the same.

I'd rather see the month of January be for the youth hunting personally. More free time in Jan for the kids to be able to go to the ranch and also it's Cold. I'd rather let my kids get a deer and not have to worry about bugs and spoilage due to the heat we're likely to encounter in Oct. I take them on the youth weekend every year and we sit in a stand and sweat to death and my youngest is more preoccupied with the 5 million wasps trying to get into the blind than hunting. Probably not a problem for most guys but it's been a problem for us in the past.

I don't support making all of October a youth hunt but I would support making all of January a youth hunt.

We NEED, I repeat NNEEEEDD, youth hunters! If we don't get them in young, theres a good chance we'll never get them! I'm all for month long youth seasons in OCTOBER AND JANUARY!!

I'm 100% for it. Do we know if it's going to happen for sure? I have 3 boys and they are all into football, baseball and they wrestle. They are only in Jr now and they don't get enough time to bow hunt at all. I think it would help the kids stay interested. The Youth weekend now is NOT enough. Heck Oklahoma lets him hunt 3 days and TX only lets them go 2. JMO

again i agree but i do not believe you have to wreck bow season to add youth hunting, let them bow hunt during october, why add rifles and take away from bow hunting, there are all ready 61 youth days in november and december, plus two days in october and two in january

How is youth hunting supposed to "wreck" bow season?!?!?!? Who said all youths hunt with a gun???? And your also forgeting to add that out of those 61 days of November and December that the kids will be sitting in school for 32 of those days, give or take depending on school schedules each year! Add in missed days on the weekends for football, soccer, etc. especially if its peewee!! You can take away another 12 days there! You have eraesd 44 of those 64 days you talked about. then you add in days you can't take them because of work and stuff, they are kids, birthday parties, other school functions! That leaves very few opportunities to spend time affield with them and enjoy it! I understand that many of are against it, but think about it from the stand point of teaching future hunters and keeping our tradition alive! Dont discourage them, lets increase interest! We need all the help fighting the antis we can get, not creating conflict amongst ourselves!
