im sure this question gets asked a lot but here it goes. Female lab, when is the best time to have her fixed? what say THF?

Sorry, couldn't resist. There is a lot of research out there indicating that spaying/neutering early can cause significant health problems. How long depends on what you read but being a bang for your buck kind of guy I would say wait until you OFA at 2 and get both done at the same time while she's sedated.

Before she has the first accidental litter! Me being a rescue dog person agrees with this. But I do respect that hunting lines will disappear if every one did it at 6 months. If you are responsible and don't let her get out and have that surprise litter I'd say wait till around 2 if doing it early increases health risk.

Years ago we did them really young. They were just a couple of months old. Izzy had urinary tract infections and the vet wanted to wait until she had one heat cycle to fix her. If she is an inside dog and you have never had one in heat, you may want to do it before she comes into heat. I hear people always saying older is better. I have never researched it, just followed what my current vet recommended.

Hormones were put into an animal for a reason. Remove them to soon and you can really have issues. Angie

My females are 3 and 4 years old, and still intact.
Never had a accidental litter.
I wouldn't spay or neuter a dog before 2, if they were going to be used for hunting.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Sorry, couldn't resist. There is a lot of research out there indicating that spaying/neutering early can cause significant health problems. How long depends on what you read but being a bang for your buck kind of guy I would say wait until you OFA at 2 and get both done at the same time while she's sedated. What is OFA?

If you bought from a good breeder there would most likely be a puppy guarantee that would require you to do so though.

I had my lab done at 11 months on the advice of a vet. Have had no problems and she turns 2 in about 10 days.
A clear conscience is often the sign of a fuzzy memory.

Just had my soon to be 3 year old BLF done. Waited as long as I felt comfortable with.
